How can I turn off Stolen Device Protection if Face ID is not working?

Hi GM, since 2 or 3 days my FACE ID suddenly stopped working, i feel since i activated Stolen Device Protection my face id isn't working.

I am unable to even Reset Face ID since it is not recognizing my face ID.

Due to this i am facing lot of difficulties to access my banking applications.

"Remove This Device" on iCloud gives

"Cannot Remove iPhone. Prepare It for Repair or Trade In?

This iPhone is linked to your Apple Account and cannot be removed while it is online, but you can still prepare it for repair or trade in."

I turned off the iPhone for several minutes, and then was able to use Remove This Device; iCloud's going to keep a handle on it for 30 days.

I powered up the iPhone, and went to Stolen Device Protection, to turn it off. It tried twice on FaceId, then asked for the iPhone passcode. It accepted the code, and showed SDP as Off.

FaceID still doesn't work for login. I rebooted, and still not working for login or for apps.

I reset FaceId, and started 'Set Up Face Id'. The camera gets to 'Position your face in the frame', fails over to 'Reposition your face in the frame, your face is out of view', and sits there. Restarting the phone doesn't help with that.

So, I'll go look for a thread about resetting FaceId, but at least I've turned off Stolen Device Protection, for which I thank you.

Shut off any add-on VPN apps, or anything else that alters network access and routing.

If Stolen Device Protection is set to Familiar Locations, turn it off and wait an hour.

If Stolen Device Protection is set to Always, you'll need to log into iCloud.

Log into iCloud.com/find, and remove your iPhone from your Find My devices.

This removal also shuts off Stolen Device Protection.

Then re-enable Find My on your iPhone, and don't reenable Stolen Device Protection.

Mr. Hoffman I have a question for you. Couldn't a thief just do this same route?

SDP is a means to delay the damage that can arise from a trusted-device iPhone stolen, with a compromised passcode; providing a means to slow an Apple Account take-over.

Not to prevent it. Particularly if a thief with a trusted device is given enough time. (And as an aside, eSIM makes some of this take-over process that much more difficult.)

After a trusted device is stolen, you will want to mark it as lost, send an erase, and to start your recovery from the compromise. If you dawdle here, you can still have a bad day. Bad beyond the iPhone loss, that is.

U need to go back to the location u enabled it at or a familiar location like home to have it accept the Face ID to turn it off . Clearly it’s a glitch that they have NOT responded to or fixed in the recent updates . Whats the point of stolen device protection a Face ID or a password if none of those are going to work . I had to drive home after I had left to be able to get on a zoom call . Deactivating it and never using it again . Takes u on an infinite loop of enter password then the face if trying again and neither unlocking it . What’s the point of locking owners out of the phone , how does this help anyone . Basically makes more sense to leave it phone at home if u that worried about having it stolen cuz it locks the owner out too with no way to get in . Apple fix this !! The password and Face ID should work for owners to get into their own stuff regardless what protections are turned on . No one wants a protection from being able to operate their own phone !!! BE for real makes me feel like Apple really slipping and makes me want to switch cuz this is weird and just dumb for a company that’s supposed so advanced and smart , people have been complaining for over a year get it together

That seems a somewhat different issue from the failed Face ID hardware discussed in previous replies.

As for what to do should the Face ID hardware fail, see previous replies.

Face ID no longer works after activating Stolen Device Protection in iPhone 13. I can’t turn off face id, I cant reset it or add a different appearance and I can’t turn off the stolen device protection. I’ve updated software, backed everything up, there is nothing covering the camera and I did a few hard resets with no luck. This seems to have occurred after the recent software update.
