Pages to ePub conversion

In 2023 I created an ePub document, and published it in Apple Books, in fixed layout, including end notes, created in Pages. My end note numbers appeared in the resulting text body where they should. Now I have done the same thing today in the same formats, from a different Pages document, and there are no end note numbers (I've not published). I am on Ventura 13.6.2 with a 2023 MacBook Pro M2 computer. The recorded end note numbers in the back of the book appear, since this is in fixed layout and are being considered just text. Both of these were Word > Pages > ePub. Why isn't this working, this time?

OK . . . here is a screen shot of where I am - page 2, which is the first page with the offending characters, the title page. Why can't I find the FIND FIELD in order to paste into it? Also - by chance can you see the character in this page of Calibre? There are two that refer to two JPGs next to them in the page. Here too is a screen shot of the title page we are on, importantly with characters only on this iPad screenshot in IOS. Not appearing on my laptop. You can see the characters next to the illustrations.

I was unsuccessful with Word advance find - what I see on a Mac screen is not jibing with what I'm reading, Looks like it was for Windows. I copied and pasted the series of characters and it found nothing, certainly no object replacement characters. I even harked back to a post of yours in 2019 where it was indicated to try to use Calibre to create another ePub. I downloaded the program and tried, and all I got was a basically unformatted ePub, nothing like the clean one I produced by myself from Pages. It just strikes me repeatedly that the only place I see those ORCs is on my iPhone and iPad. And, that is where I expect a reader to be reading from, in this day and age. Again, Books is not affected on my laptop. And I see tons of comments that folks are seeing those pesky things all over Facebook, X, Instagram, in all kinds of places. I may have to publish it as is and see what happens. Sorry I can't seem to make it happen.

Sorry, I was bleary eyed and failed to realize that the article was using Word on Windows, not on Mac. I wound up deliberately inserting that Object Replacement Character into a Word document on macOS Monterey using LibreOffice 2024.2.0. Clearly showed in the Word document, and Pages v13.1 on Monterey apparently filtered that bogus character when Pages opened the .docx. A hexdump of the text from the Pages document also shows that character was not present.

Same Word document copied to iCloud Drive and opened in Pages v13.2 on iOS 17.3.1. Exporting to EPUB (fixed) with embedded fonts did not show any [obj] debris in the EPUB when viewed on iOS.

Did I mention that this [obj] character is a PITA.

When you have that EPUB open in Calibre's ebook-editor application, you may have 448 discrete chapters shown as chapter-1.xml ... chapter-448.xml, though it would seem odd that it would show just chapter-1.xml containing your 448 "chapters." If the first option, then you would have to select each of the chapter-1.xml ... chapter-448.xml documents in the side bar, paste that object replacement character's invisible code into the Find field, and then click the Replace All button. Tedious as all h.ll.

You probably cannot make an exact correlation to page numbers in the EPUB where that object replacement character occurs, and what is represented in the chapter .xml files shown to you by the ebook-editor as that content is not isolated to page numbers, only what is in what it thinks is a chapter.

I did that upon your suggestion. Nothing happens. The fields (plus replace) were there the first time I ever opened Calibre, and when I tried it, it found nothing to replace. Then the stuff at the bottom just disappeared. And never came back with double clicking, single clicking, clicking on the multicolored verbiage, trying to scroll, expanding the the page (there is no full screen option). I am at a loss again.
