iOS 17.4 Siri call relationship bug

Hey, is anyone else having that?

After upgrading to iOS 17.4, making calls with Siri got messed up.

I have set up different relationships in my contact card, such as brother, mother, etc...

Everything has been working normally so far, but it got messed up after the update. However, not for all relationships.

For example. for my brother relationship:

  • it still works when I ask "Hey Siri, who is my brother", showing up the right contact
  • however, when I say, "Hey Siri, call my brother" it shows two options to choose from, both completely irrelevant to my brother's contact, like 2 places from Apple Maps.

I even tried the following dialogue:

  • Who is my brother?
  • (Proper contact showing up)
  • Call him
  • It again shows the irrelevant map results

One weird thing is that for every contact relationship that isn't working, it shows the same map results for you to choose who to call...

Initially, I thought it was for contacts that I hadn't saved a phonetic name to. But then I checked my brother's contact and he does have a phonetic name, so not sure what is going on...

My phone had restarted before doing the upgrade and the same operation was working properly.

I even tried removing the contact relationship fields and re-adding them without any result.

There is always a chance that something might be a coincidence. but this happening directly after the update and me trying to set it up from scratch and not managing it, surely increases the chances of it being related tp the update and not a mere coincidence.

There could certainly be some underlying conditions (maybe something to do with language, because my contacts are in Greek and I am using English phonetic names), that contribute to the problem's cause, HOWEVER, this does not change the fact that this was properly working before, so the update probably changed an existing behavior in an unwanted way. This is the definition of a bug.

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. Siri Call issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected Siri.

Fun fact, I enabled Siri captions to show what it understands as I am speaking to it, and it seems that it immediately replaces the "my brother" words with a Greek name (I am located in Greece), which however is not at all related to my brother's contact...

While at that screen if I say "call my brother" again without terminating the conversation first, it seems to properly understand and call the correct contact.
