How to get my MacBook to recognize my new iPhone?

I have gotten my new iPhone because my last one got destroyed and won't turn on so I am unable to do the touch transfer set up for my new phone. so I decided to do the Mac set up for new phone but when I plug my new iPhone into my Mac they aren't connecting.
