It is not unusual for an iPad to become warm when being used - more so when using some types of iPad case. High screen brightness and/or CPU intensive Apps will also create more heat.

The key point is that whilst your iPad may become very warm in normal use, the iPad should not become uncomfortably hot to handle. If your iPad is becoming too hot to hold, initially try a forced-restart - as this can clear an isolated software issue.

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

If the problem persists, try to correlate unexpected heating with specific Apps or tasks - as some poorly optimised Apps are known to lead to consistently higher chassis temperatures.

If you have any concerns, you should take your iPad along to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store - where the technicians can examine and test your iPad for faults:

Be aware that if purchased directly from Apple, in most countries/regions you have 14-days within which to unconditionally return the iPad for exchange or refund. If applicable, you might be best advised to act quickly - as upon expiry of the 14-day window of opportunity, remedy for faults will be handled as a warranty issue.

Hello,

I recently bought the iPad Air M2 and also got the same issue.

It heats up around the camera area as long as I am using the Apple Pencil and taking notes, getting very hot after 10-ish minutes of use. This also leads to extreme battery drainage, 40% loss in only 90 minutes of time, while Apple states it takes about 6min for 1% to drain.

I also owned an iPad 8th Generation and used it for 3 years, 8-12h a day with my pencil for my studies and never had this problem. Could it really be that M chips are not optimized for / with the Pencil?

This really is not acceptable for a device that costs 800€ and I am very disappointed. Recent software update did not fix it either. Apple Support ran a Diagnose and said everything seems fine with the device, but clearly it is not. What are the steps I could take further? Replacing the device with the new one will not really help, as I heard many others did this and nothing has changed.

I really need some help and advice because iPad is a crucial essential for my studies and I rely on it heavily.

I had Ipad Pro 2017 model before I purchased the new iPad Air 2024. I have been using the same 2-3 apps (goodnotes, YouTube, and chrome) and I never had any issue of overheating with pro. I just bought this air a week ago and it is overheating a lot. It's like I have downgraded my iPad even though the old model was like 7 (SEVEN) years old than this one. Insane.
