How can I fix internet speed issues on my Mac mini M2 Pro?

I have a 6 month old Mac Mini M2 Pro and am constantly having internet issues. It connects to my WiFi with no problem (as does my iPhone and iPad) but constantly looses internet connection.

A couple of weeks ago I spent hours with two different Apple technicians who were unable to fix the issue. I then played around myself trying various things on these threads and suddenly all was ok.

Now same again, connected to WiFi but internet speeds down to 2mb so unusable.

Has anyone found a solution to these issues yet as I am getting to the point of buying a Windows PC.

It's your prerogative of course to not spend more time on the issue. Just a thought though--WiFi issues, for any device, can be time consuming to resolve. There's a lot of variables--hardware, software, location, the room/building, the weather, etc--and many/most aren't static in nature. It can be frustrating, especially so when a problem suddenly appears. It's not an uncommon irritant and is possible for any WiFi device/appliance.


(At some point if you end up troubleshooting the issue, you'll help yourself if you're systematic in your approach and write down each step you take.)

Troubleshooting Mac Wi-Fi:

Just because you have a network connected does not mean your are connected to the Internet. You may be using intenal LAN services.

Troubleshooting Mac WiFi:

A few thoughts to try...

I. Clear the Temporary Internet Files:


II. Restart your Router:

  1. Power: off the router
  2. Wait: 30 seconds
  3. Power: It back on


III. Boot in Safe Mode:

In Safe ModeLogin Items do not run at login, certain preferences are set aside, and damaged system files are then reset. So, once booted in to Safe Mode, wait 30 seconds, and then boot up normally, attempting another update install. For instructions, go here: How to Use safe Mode on your Mac - Apple Support


IV. Try a New Admin User:

What happens when you create a new administrator user, and log into it? Do you still get this error? If not, then it is likely an error with the current user. If so, then it is likely an error with your Mac.

High speed USB cables, drives, displays and other devices can interfere with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

1) Check to make sure that there are no USB cables or devices in-between the Mac mini and Router.

2) If possible, move the Mac mini and Router closer together and/or use an Ethernet cable.

3) Test the Mac mini on its side with bottom facing the Router to see if Wi-Fi improves.

If you've not and if you're able to, try separating the bands (ie, 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz) in your router. Router band auto-connection/switching can be finicky. Forget the network in your Mini, and other devices, then reestablish connection with the router's new configuration. Test each band to find which one, if any, gives you joy.


If you've not, check your router's manual/documentation for its QoS (Quality of Service) implementation and settings.


There's also channel width to consider. Apple suggests:

"Channel width

Set to 20 MHz for the 2.4 GHz band. Set to Auto or all widths for the 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands.


Channel width specifies how large of a “pipe” is available to transfer data. Wider channels are faster but more susceptible to interference and more likely to interfere with other devices.


20 MHz for the 2.4 GHz band helps to avoid performance and reliability issues, especially near other Wi-Fi networks and 2.4 GHz devices, including Bluetooth devices.


Auto or all channel widths for 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands ensures the best performance and compatibility with all devices. Wireless interference is less of a concern in these bands."

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion, tried that but made no difference, turned Mac on this morning and couldn’t even get a WiFi signal. Finally got a signal but speed only 10mb rather than 70mb.

This issue is just ridiculous, Apple refuse to refund or exchange and just offer repair which I don’t think is good enough on 6 month old device.

Going to hedge my losses and move to Windows.
