Can't update gmail password in Mail 10.3

I am running Sierra on an iMac so that my Quickbooks software will run. I needed to update a password on a gmail account which was compromised. I updated the password in the Google website but I can't update it in the Mail app 10.3. Is there a solution so I can use the gmail account in Mail and not have to sign in to Google?

Google has upgraded its security for older devices.

To add your Gmail account, you'll need to:

  1. Delete the Gmail account on your Mac.
  2. Create an application password for your Gmail account: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en.
  3. Add your Gmail mail account on your Mac using the "Other" choice, not the Google choice. You'll then use the password created in step 1.
