My understanding was that now in photos there is a new feature to remove objects from a photo and that it downloads automatically. It is called 'Clean Up'. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max with ios18 - how can I get this function?

Because it has not been released yet.
"Clean Up" is a feature of the Apple Intelligence update coming later this year. It s not yet available for any device.
It will only come to iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, and all iPhone 16 models when Apple Intelligence is released.

I don't think I want to go down that road and rather wait for Apple Intelligence to be released for the iPhone in my country (Germany). Initially I tried to get Apple Intelligence early on my iPhone Pro 15 Max, but after changing the location to US, the language to English US and Siri to English US and restarting everything, I still could not download "Clean Up" to my iPhone. All that happened has been that I could no longer access my banking account and could no longer control my solar panels and the central heating. And the Photos.app started to index the Photos Library again and the search did not work for a long time. It would be too much extra work and highly inconvenient to pretend to live in a different country. Clean-up is already working well on my Mac with Sequoia with the language and region set to Germany.
Me as well but I’ve learned that we need an iPhone 15 or higher for this particular feature….drats

If you live in the European Union or China, or have a model from those regions you won't have Apple Intelligence yet.
How to get Apple Intelligence - Apple Support
For European Union residents
Apple Intelligence is available with macOS Sequoia 15.1 or later on supported Mac models.
For iOS 18.1 and later, and iPadOS 18.1 and later, Apple Intelligence will not currently work if you are in the EU and if your Apple Account Country/Region is also in the EU. If traveling outside of the EU, Apple Intelligence will work on your iPhone or iPad if your language and Siri language are set to a supported language.
In April, many of the core features of Apple Intelligence will start to roll out to iPhone and iPad users in the EU.
For China residents
Apple Intelligence will not currently work for supported devices purchased in China mainland. For supported devices purchased outside of China mainland, Apple Intelligence will not currently work if you are in China mainland and if your Apple Account Country/Region is also in China mainland.
When Apple Intelligence is available in the EU or China mainland, previously purchased devices that support Apple Intelligence will be able to activate and use it in that region.
Otherwise, make sure your iPhone's language, region and Siri language is set to a supported one, and the entry in Settings should change to Apple Intelligence & Siri.
Turn it on there should allow Clean Up to appear when editing a photo then.

Wait until April. Apple Intelligence is not yet available in Europe, and won't be available on European models while in Europe until then.

Thanks for this. I did not realize that AI update wasn't released yet, so I'll remain hopeful. Maybe by the time I do upgrade my phone later this year, it will be available.
I have the same phone, but I know in advance that it will not support artificial intelligence features, but this feature you can get in the Google Photos app
