My understanding was that now in photos there is a new feature to remove objects from a photo and that it downloads automatically. It is called 'Clean Up'. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max with ios18 - how can I get this function?

Because it has not been released yet.
"Clean Up" is a feature of the Apple Intelligence update coming later this year. It s not yet available for any device.
It will only come to iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, and all iPhone 16 models when Apple Intelligence is released.
Apple Intelligence is available NOW, but only to the models you listed
I have an iPhone 15 Pro + iOs 18.2. Still no sign of Cleanup tool in my Photos app. Any idea ? :(
