I upgraded my iPhone 12 Pro to a 16 Pro, and the new phone will not connect to my 2018 Mazda CX-5 with CarPlay. When I plug it in, it charges but makes no sign of connecting.

I had the same issue with my 2019 Toyota Avalon. I tried some cable adapters (both lighting and USB A) to convert one of the ends of the old cables I had. That failed miserably and didn’t work.
I bought an Anker USB-A A to USB-C cable for about $10 from Walmart. It comes with a cable wrap which is nice in the center console to keep things organized.
The new cable worked right away. CarPlay booted faster than ever before. No issues at all.
When I connect to Bluetooth before plugging the USB cable into the phone, it asks if I want to set up CarPlay. What did you choose when it asked you at this point?
This really is a failure of Apple. And they don't give a sh't about it and either the support doesn't know about this issue or they pretend they don't know about this issue.

Same thing with my 2018 BMW X5. Also, the phone will not pair with my Apple Watch.
What would happen when you used either of the first two cables? Would they try to connect and fail? Or it be like they weren't even plugged in?

Carplay doesn’t work with the 15 either. I’m so upset. I was hoping they would fix it with the 16.
Yes! This! My 15 will not work with my Apple Watch or CarPlay. I’m irate. I was going to upgrade to 16 but looks like they still haven’t fixed it!!!
Didn’t work. They need to put out an update. They know how essential this is today
