Macos Sequoia 15.0 and office 365 - not responding

Since installing macOS Sequoia (15.0), I've had a problem when I open a Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint file with Office 365 (latest version 16.89). The application doesn't respond. I have to force it to quit and open again: MS Word opened the file correctly. I've reinstalled Office several times, but the problem persists. In general, I can open one file, then application not responding.

Mac Studio, macOS 14.7

Since the latest MacOS Sequoia 15.0 upgrade for the past few months, this "not responding" situation has made my life ****. Even the latest MacOS Sequoia 15.1 doesn't change that nightmare situation. Don't know who is responsible for this; Apple or Microsoft, but we end users are victims :-( Please Help!

I found my OWN SOLUTION

It cost me new Mac Office 2021.

When you try to open those idle .xlsx or .docs files, "choose app" section, there is "recommended apps" tab.

I can't choose MS Office Excel and Word.

Change "recommended apps" into "All apps" and tick apply all

you will start to open all your files on your laptop.

I cant send you pictures for that

But I can do that later

Thank you for this. I tried to do "open with" and did indeed see that "recommended apps" was the option. I changed that to "all apps" and opened the app. I was hopeful that this would magically address my problem too which is not actually opening files but saving a copy (and saving new files as well), but, alas, it did not.

Please keep the suggestions coming folks. This is a horrible experience for everyone - and I just got my first Mac in decades right before the update, not a good way to start a renewed relationship. ugh

I used to Use Office 2016 permanent license products and use perfectly, unit with Sequoia 15.0,

After that .docx and .xlsx files became idle.

When I try to ask, "please choose app" notification pop-up.

I felt like 2016 in not compatible with Sequoia 15.0.

I bought Office 2021 permanent license

Deleted 2016 and installed 2021.

Still same, nothing changed.

I still can't open .docx and .xlsx intention files.

.ppt is working interestingly.

I send complaint to Office support desk.

No reply.

How I Fixed It

Since upgrading to macOS Sequoia (15.0.1), I’ve been facing issues with Microsoft Office 365 (version 16.89). Every time I tried opening a Word, Excel, the application wouldn’t respond, forcing me to quit and restart it. After reinstalling Office multiple times without any luck, I finally found a solution: resetting macOS to factory settings.

To fix the issue, I went to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset, and did a full reset. After that, Office 365 began working as expected, allowing me to open and work on files without freezing.

This process solved the problem for me, so if anyone else is facing similar issues, it might be worth a try!

I am able to use the online version as well. Otherwise I would also have to use a Windows machine.

This is still incredibly inconvenient since the apps are not the same and it seems like the online apps don't have all of the features the desktop ones do (or at least I don't have time to figure out where they are hiding). At least I can go to the online app to create and save a file and then use the desktop to continue. No save as and I can't export a file to another format (like PowerPoint to mp4 or Word to pdf or Excel to csv).

Dear all

I try all I reinstalled my brand new MacBook Pro m4 max 2 times and it came again that excel, powerpoint and outlook some times freeze.

Then I did this what helped me so far and it works now all fine:

2. Reset Launch Services:

• Open Terminal and execute the following commands to reset Launch Services, which can resolve application association issues:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -lint -r -f -v -dump -domain local -domain system -domain user -domain network

killall Dock

3. Clear Office Font Cache:

• Corrupted font caches can cause Office applications to hang. To clear the font cache:

• Open Terminal.

• Navigate to the Office font cache directory:

cd ~/Library/Group\ Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/

• Remove the font cache:

rm -fr FontCache

• Restart the Office application.

4. Delete Notification Temp Folder:

• If you’ve updated to macOS 15.1 and are experiencing issues with applications hanging, deleting the notification temp folder may help:

• Navigate to the following directory:

~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.UserNotifications/Library/UserNotifications/Remote/default

• Delete all contents within this folder.

I hope it helps someone else as it worked for me. Not sure when I need to re do it again hope Microsoft Apple will fix that issue soon.

Cheers all
