How do I fix heating issue on my iPhone 16 Pro?

Hey there! I just got the iPhone 16 Pro 1TB, and it’s overheating like crazy. It’s kinda scary, feels like it might explode in my hand while I’m typing this. I bought it less than 24 hours ago. Any tips? Also, what’s the return policy? Thanks

Some activities such as charging or a lot of computational activity (e.g., video), generate heat. Some warmth is to be anticipated.* "Keep your iPhone, the power adapter, and any wireless charger in a well-ventilated area when in use or charging."** Read this article about keeping your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures - If your iPhone or iPad gets too hot or too cold - Apple Support

Changes in software such as upgrades may introduce new features which may add to power drain and heat generation. Check Settings > Battery to see if there are apps running that use a lot of power. If there are, decide if you can turn off a service such as Settings > General > Background app refresh when an app is in the background, or Settings > Privacy > Location Services. If you think there is a problem with a device, have Apple inspect it. Go to this page to find your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) or Apple Authorized Distributor (AAD) --> Find Locations

How to make a Genius Bar appointment

1. Go to Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

2. Go to "Get hardware help".

3. Select your hardware and continue selecting options requiring replacing parts until you see "Bring in for Repair"

4. Sign in with your Apple ID

It could also be if you first got it then it is doing some setting up, requiring a lot of computation. Give it a day or two and see if there's the same problem.

I received my phone on 9/27/24 and initially the phone wouldn’t turn on even after charging for over 3 hours. I arranged for Apple to send me a box to investigate. I put the phone back in the original box and forgot about it. The box arrived today 9/30, and I decided to see if it would charge and turn on. To my amazement the phone finally began charging. Immediately, I noticed how hot it was. I’ve never used the phone but it’s super hot and worrisome. I read the comments about waiting but waiting too long will make the phone ineligible for return.

Tired of everyone taping about the billions of data running in the background. This is lowkey embarrassing, it's been over a week and the battery drops 1% each minute. My mothers SE and my 16 Pro somehow got WORSE battery ???

And now the magical solution is to give it time ? I go to sleep and wake up to -30% of battery?? No location enabled, AOD turned off, Background app refresh turned off, WiFi only.... What's next

I have an iPhone 16 with the same issues described here and it stops working when it gets very hot WITHOUT any message on the screen. After the temperature is back to normal I can use it for no longer than 5 minutes before it „freezes“ again and it’s very, very hot. Never had this issue with any new iPhone since the 3GS. So this is serious! I will send my iPhone 16 back.

I had a “genius” bar appointment today to address the overheating problem. Really a useless experience.

Just left Apple “Genius” Bar.

My phone has twice gotten too hot to hold and three times too hot to charge.

First genius: You’ve got a super powerful processor in there. Of course it’ll get hot.

Ignored him

Second genius: “Feel a car engine hood after you drive it for 30 minutes. It’ll be warm”

Me: “But the car won’t prevent me from filling up an empty gas tank. It won’t make the seats so hot I can’t sit on them”

Manager: “Try the new sw update. It’s supposed to address a heat issue.”

So well trained are these geniuses.

Well just last night I was on a phone call while charging my iPhone 16 Pro, which I literally got only a couple of weeks ago, and at some point when I take a look at the display I find the notification that charge had been put on hold due to iPhone temperature, and since then I have been extremely worried that since I hadn't noticed this while I was on my call, I have no idea how long that had been going on and might now end up hurting my battery health, which after two weeks is still obviously at 100%

I mean, before this 16 Pro I had a 15 Pro for an entire year and managed to successfully keep its battery health at 100% but it had never shown this charge on hold notification. Now I am literally torturing myself thinking that the fact that this has happened so soon with my 16 Pro means that it will most likely go down in battery health precisely due to this issue. Please help me out here, Apple has gotten us really obsessed over this battery health issue, then they say don't worry, so why on earth do you end up placing so much relevance on it at the moment of pricing the phone for a trade in? Are they seriously intending to mess with our heads here?

Yes mine overheats and goes dark. It’s embarrassing Apple does this as am a realtor and have to tell my clients all the time my phone died and then drive somewhere with WiFi and use a big laptop. Makes no sense for how much I paid and android users never have this issue. It literally affects my job and I lose money quite often so I might have to buy an android at this point even though a hate them just so I can do my job

iPhone 16 max pro 1T - same randomly getting hot can’t hold no warning message or shut down. Customer service said must be soft wear related that’s nonsense, it’s the phone my mother has same phone soft wear no issues, I’m paying for insurance and can’t get another phone, will be on a 15 hr flight and week long cruise if it blows up or catches fire, bad deal for Apple not replacing , I have tried no luck!

This is this issue with iPhone 16 pro??? It’s burning hot after miner usage and if we keep it in charge it can be used as hair straighter - it’s that hot. I spoke to support team they said if temperature warning issue is not coming then it’s not a problem, but we are not able to hold the phone in hand if it’s burning hot. This is not acceptable from Apple. Too much disappointing.
