Apple News Fails to Load After iOS 18.2 Installation

Apple News fails to load after iOS 18.2 install on 7 Gen iPad. Tried deleting and reinstalling news app, resetting network settings, pausing VPN, and a full reset, all without success. Any tips would be appreciated.

iPad, iPadOS 18

So ... I have been able to get it to work after 18.2.1 on 7th Gen iPad [partially!]. Following some of the previous recommendations, here are the steps:

  • Turn off Apple News in iCloud
  • Remove the app and choose to delete the data
  • Restart the iPad
  • Re-download the app ...... but before you open it again .... turn off your wifi
  • Open the News app. It will tell you it is not connected to the internet
  • Turn on your wifi again ... the app should start syncing and load up
  • DO NOT turn iCloud News again, this recreates the spinning problem

This gives you a working install of News+, but without the syncing across devices. You can re-select magazine again and enter subscriptions etc. I've been through this cycle a couple of times (I made the mistake of turning News on again in iCloud the first time) and it looks to be repeatable. Not ideal, but if it works for you, at least you have got some of your functionality back. Good luck!

Fixed it!!! I tried all these other things and it turned out to be incredibly simple. I called Apple News and talked to a supervisor. She had me scroll to the left screen where the Apple News display had been. Then I pressed down. And went to Edit in upper left corner. Then add Widget. Search for News. Scroll past topic, and keep scrolling till you see the full Apple News layout. Select. And Voila. It is there. I cannot believe it.

If you have a VPN App or profiles installed, or a security/AV/firewall App such as Norton, these may be interfering with your iPad's network stack. The resolution is usually simple; if installed, you may need to fully remove (if only temporarily) the associated Security App and/or VPN.

If this resolves your issue, the VPN and/or security App can be reinstated after the connectivity problem has been resolved.

This thread is getting messy, so let's sum up where we stand...

Until/if Apple comes through with a real fix for the Apple News won't load issue, we iPad7th Generation users are on our own.

But thanks to user RCF001, a set of steps was found that, if you follow them exactly, MAY get you past the loading screen. Here is a link to those steps: Apple News Fails to Load After iOS 18.2 I… - Apple Community

These steps did not work for everyone, but it worked for some of us. It was also discovered that if the fix did work for you, you may still get sent back to the "loading" problem if you close the Apple News app. So try not to close Apple News after you've applied the steps.

Note for less experienced users: As far as I know, there are two ways to avoid closing Apple News app: 1) Avoid (as long as possible) powering off or restarting your iPad, which clears the memory. 2) There's a screen mode in which you can see all the apps that are running in the background and, if you press one of those app images and swipe upward, it will close that app. So don't do that. Just let Apple News run in the background all the time.

Hope this helps.

I updated my 7th Gen iPad to iPadOS 18.3 a few minutes ago and so far, fingers crossed, I now have a functioning Apple News App. At first launch after updating to 18.3, I had the dreaded spinner, spinning and I thought, good grief not again. But it did launch and so far so good. Others here are reporting similar successes. Let's hope Apple got it right. I almost cancelled my subscription...almost.

Watching this space.

Thanks,

Michael

Ok, I had the same problem as my iPad would not load my apps after up grading to 18.2. I tried all the suggestions posted in this forum and they did not work.

So as I have an iPhone with identical apps that were on my iPad, I backed up to iCloud, then reset the iPad and deleted everything. Then pairing my iPhone to the iPad I uploaded from iCloud.

I then re-installed missing apps and resigned in to most apps.

my apps have not lost any of my personal details and all is well. I now have 18.2 and more free space.

give it ago it worked for me.

Finish uploading the new release of iOS 18.30. I have two iPads version 7. Once the update went through, I deleted Apple news and then reinstall it. It worked on both iPads. In fact, the one that I’m using and I haven’t looked at it for over an hour, and it still comes back with news. Previously, it would not come back. Looks like the fix is working. Good luck, everybody!

I have responded to your instruction and yes it did work only once. The fact that it was closed, it did not open up again. It was suggested to leave the app open in the background and I did but the app if not use for more than an hour or more has the same problems as closing.

I’ve noticed quite a few other responses mentioned it work, and then it stopped. What I started to do and I’ve been doing this for quite a while, but I wanted to make sure it worked before I put it out there.

1 Delete the app and make sure you keep your subscription

2 Reinstall the app

3 go to settings and turn off Wi-Fi

4 Open up the app, and it will indicated app cannot open because of Wi-Fi

5 go to settings and turn Wi-Fi back on

6 Go back to the app and click on it and it will open with News.

This takes just a couple of minutes to get it back installed properly.

As long as I’m reading and have the app open, the News app will work. Of course once I stop reading it and it sits in background after a couple hours it goes back to the original problem. I do this every morning when I wake up spending about an hour or more reading and that’s it. If I decide I want more news I just go to Google News or Yahoo! News or MSN to stay up-to-date.

I have been doing this for over a week. I just hope Apple comes through and fixes this problem in the very near future.

good luck, and I hope this works for you.

It is true!!! I can attest to it: I just updated to 18.3 and it the News app is back in business. Huzzah!

Too bad that I don't need it anymore. My wife noticed my frustration on not being able to read the news during Christmas time, and gifted me a brand new iPad during early January.

I am no longer using by iPad 7th Generation, but it is good to hear that Apple finally got around to fixing the problem.

Cheers!
