Apple News Fails to Load After iOS 18.2 Installation

Apple News fails to load after iOS 18.2 install on 7 Gen iPad. Tried deleting and reinstalling news app, resetting network settings, pausing VPN, and a full reset, all without success. Any tips would be appreciated.

So ... I have been able to get it to work after 18.2.1 on 7th Gen iPad [partially!]. Following some of the previous recommendations, here are the steps:

  • Turn off Apple News in iCloud
  • Remove the app and choose to delete the data
  • Restart the iPad
  • Re-download the app ...... but before you open it again .... turn off your wifi
  • Open the News app. It will tell you it is not connected to the internet
  • Turn on your wifi again ... the app should start syncing and load up
  • DO NOT turn iCloud News again, this recreates the spinning problem

This gives you a working install of News+, but without the syncing across devices. You can re-select magazine again and enter subscriptions etc. I've been through this cycle a couple of times (I made the mistake of turning News on again in iCloud the first time) and it looks to be repeatable. Not ideal, but if it works for you, at least you have got some of your functionality back. Good luck!

Like many others, these re-install instructions worked for a while, but then Apple News lapsed back to the endless spinner. So I repeated the instructions and that re-established Apple News. And then I tried one more step that seemed to make the fix last longer.

Here are those steps:

  • Open the Shortcuts app on the iPad. Select the "Gallery" (a collection of premade shortcuts)
  • In the search box, type Apple News and click to search
  • The search should produce a shortcut named "Top Stories from Apple News"
  • If Shortcuts gives you the option to add that shortcut to your Gallery, do that so next time you can go straight to the "Last" step below.
  • Last, click on the shortcut box labeled "Top Stories from Apple News". This should then open your Apple News and load the latest news stories.

Let us know if this works for you.

Good luck!

UPDATE: I chatted with an Apple Support representative and he responded as follows:

"Upon checking my resources, Apple is aware of the issue and that it is currently under review. Apple doesn't yet completely understand the issue. Therefore, Apple can't promise a solution or predict when an investigation will finish.

It is recommended to keep your device up to date as the resolution may come in the form of an update."

I am glad this worked for you, but if I understand correctly, you ended up with an iPad just as it was after you onboarded iPadOS 18.2. This would not solve OP's or my or others' issue, which is that iPadOS 18.2 seems to block loading of Apple News. As for the backup idea possibly making downgrading to 18.1.1 less burdensome because you can get your apps back from the backup, that does not work. You can't use a backup for the apps-only if the OS of the backup (18.2) is more advanced than the one you are trying to pull the backup into (18.1.1).

I HAD the same problem. Yesterday, I spent 40 minutes with Apple Tech Support on the phone going through the usual list of "remedies" (reboot, delete reinstall etc.). I assured the tech that I had done all of these without any long term benefit, as such shenanigans would "fix" it for the day and it would re-occur the following day. The only new thing he tried was deleting and reacquiring the Wi-Fi connection. At the time - no effect as Apple News stayed frozen. He said senior techs were aware of the Gen 7 issue and were trying to determine a fix. At this point, he was ready to give up (as was I - as I had registered the problem and wasted their time). He wanted to delete and reinstall the complete OS - which I declined and he did not push it - sounding very doubtful if such a desperate measure would work. Well - Apple News is now working as it should - for TWO WHOLE DAYS!! I have no idea what fixed it as the only new change was the Wi-Fi reconnection - but at the time News stayed frozen, so I am beginning to think they found a fault in News. Do you think they will tell us? Nah.
