I have a MacBook Air - 2014. I have not used it for a while and cannot remember the 4-6 digit pin. The hint is not helping at all. Does anyone know how I can reset this? I have my apple password.

Your question is perfectly clear and I understand it. If you can't remember that PIN then you have to erase the Mac. It may be necessary to (quoting from that Apple Support document):
Follow the steps here, you may have the option to reset it with the Apple ID, but not always.

If you still can't reset the login password, then continue with this Support Article:
A four or six digit PIN is not the same as a password.

I must have been unclear. I know they are different. I don't have the PIN. I can't remember it. Only one password hint comes up and that did not help me remember. So that is the issue - how do I unlock my MacBook without the PIN?
