Safari is not connecting to public Wi-Fi on my MacBook Pro

Hi.

I'm having an issue since a few versions of macOS. I'm actually on macOS Sequoia 15.2 and still has this wifi issue.

When I'm using public wifi, most of the time Safari won't connect, but my Wifi connection is well established.

My other browser, Brave, works fine, but Safari is still saying it can't establish a connection or can't reach the page or something like that.

When at home, everything works fine.

I had the same problem with Sonoma and Ventura and had a different laptop. Now, I'm using a MacBook Pro M1 Pro. Before, I was using an Intel MacBook Pro.

Any idea, gang? Is there something in the settings I'm missing?

Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone and Tesserax.

I found the solution to my problem. It is the Private relay. It is known to cause some issues with Safari on public networks, some websites refusing to load. As soon as I disable it, I can surf with Safari, no problem.

So Private Relay could be a nice thing if it could work properly.

Thanks Tesserax for your help on this one.

Hmm, sounds like a configuration setting that needs to be checked in Safari.

  • From the Safari menu bar, go to Safari > Settings > Advanced > Proxies > Change Settings ...
  • On the window that appears, be sure that none of the options are enabled.

Also, is your Mac configured to use a VPN? If so, is the VPN client configured differently when at home vs. when you are at a remote location?

I suggest that you create a new user account on your Mac. The next time you need to use a public Wi-Fi, log into this new account and see if Safari allows you to access the Internet.

If it does, then there is something amiss with your current account that needs to be troubleshot what the cause may be. From what you posted, it still looks like the issue is primarily with Safari itself.

FWIW, I personally use Brave myself. Although, I will occasionally use Safari. I will take a look a closer look at the various Safari settings, but the only one that came to mind was the proxy settings ... which may have been altered when you installed a third-party VPN.

One other thing I can suggest it to run an EtreCheck report, and optionally post it here, if you need assistance with interpreting its results. EtreCheck greatly aides is identifying "difficult" issues with Macs and is recommended many others here.

Hi Testerax.

First, thank you for your help.

In Settings ->Advanced->Proxies->Change settings... there is nothing checked here.

Concerning VPN, I have NordVPN but don't use it. Following your message, I decided to remove it, I will end my subscription any time soon anyway. So, correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think it has any influence, here.

thank you again.
