Apple TV+ does not play content after age request on Mac

After updating to the latest version of macOS, the Apple TV app refuses to play age restricted content. I'm watching the Slow Horses show, and this is what happened when I tried to play the last episode of the 3rd season: I clicked the Play button, the app said that the content is for 16+, I clicked Continue, and then nothing happened. I try to click the Play button again, this time nothing happens at all - either I get an age confirmation dialogue, nor video playback. I'm 29 years old, almost 30, so the age should not be the problem. I tried to restart the app and Mac, clear app cache, check age restriction settings on the Mac, family sharing settings (I'm the admin), download the show, open it offline, without success.

I have two Macs both signed in with my Apple Account, the problem happens on both of them. The Apple TV app on my iPhone and iPad works as expected, it plays back the age restricted shows. Does anyone have any ideas what else can I do to resolve the problem?

If it plays on iPhone and iPad, then that (matching?) Apple Account’s age setting is not the issue here.

Macs may have addition custom lowering conditions set for content, through:

System Settings﹥Screen Time﹥[ʀᴇsᴛʀɪᴄᴛɪᴏɴs] Content and Privacy﹥Off|On ﹥[if On:] Store Restrictions﹥ᴀʟʟᴏᴡᴇᴅ ᴄᴏɴᴛᴇɴᴛ﹥Movies [set minimum age/rating] | TV Show [set minimum age/rating] | …

Macs or other Apple devices that are managed through MDM/corporate or edu deployment can have additional restrictions set by the organization that manages these devices. Apple Platform Deployment - Apple Support

This is the conclusion of my chat with Apple support, after pointing out issues on Windows and Mac OS Apple TV Apps with support giving me the following reply:

"Apple is aware of the issue and that it is currently under review. In the meantime, please try to access the content using the website. We will not be able to confirm when the fix can be done but surely it won't be long as team is working on it."

I have the same error. I think problem started with OS update to 15.4. I have since updated to 15.4.1 and error still occurs.

Try to play MA15+ content. Click Play. Pop up asks to confirm 15+. Click yes. Nothing plays. After this clicking play on any MA15+ content no longer produces pop up.

Deleted the Apple TV preference file 'com.apple.TV.plist' in user/library/preferences

After this the pop up will appear again, but still the same issue.

I have contacted Apple Support, they have escalated it. I'm pretty sure the issue is baked into the OS.

Same here in Geemany. Just chatted with Support. Answer was "engineers are working on it, no solution date available". Upon asking for compensation for the payed product i was offered 3 free movies for rent, which i took and were shown in my account.

Thanks for the update! Glad to see someone actually follow the recommendation on the very first page and on top of that you confirmed that Apple is aware of the issue and were compensated for your troubles. All great information.

For the other "me too" posters, you now know the options:

  • Contact Apple yourself if you want a similar compensation
  • Cancel the Apple TV+ service altogether
  • Wait for the issue to be resolved

After spending one and a half hours with Apple support. The final conclusion is MA 15+ works on all devices except for MAC's in the OS X 15.3-5. they are aware of the issue and working on a patch.

It would be helpful if their 4th level support tell their 1st level support of their plans so I didn't have to wait one and a half hours to hear this. If you are unhapy with thew service thier sudgestion is to ask for a refund and cancel the service .. UNHAPPY iCloud+ user .........

I am having the exact same issue (Australia) and it began after I updated to the newest version of Mac Sequoia 15.4.1 on my MacBook Air (2024) where I can't watch any MA15+ shows on the Apple TV app. I called Apple for support in early April and they escalated it as they said they were getting reports of this happening more and more worldwide however after I followed up via email saying the issue was still happening they never responded and the link to my case now has an error message. We tried a heap of troubleshooting and nothing worked (checking System Settings, re-installing Mac Sequoia) but it seems there's a bug in the newest update of Sequoia that restricts any content you watch on the Apple TV app on your MacBook as I can watch anything on my iPhone 16 Pro Max and Apple TV device on my TV without any issues. I thought Apple might have released a new update of Sequoia to fix the issue but they must not have or not enough people are having the issue to action it. Very annoying and disappointing as I am watching The Studio and other shows on Safari which isn't even in 4K! If anyone knows of any fixes please share...

I'm having the same experience. I spoke to Apple Support today. They indicated that it was a known issue, and that it was with developers for resolution. It is expected to be resolved in an upcoming release of the OS (15.4.2 or later). No timeframe was provided, but it's good to know that its a known bug, and not something that I need to work on, etc.

Contacted Support about this a couple of weeks ago and eventually decided that I would wait until the Sequoia 15.5 update came out and hope that would fix it. Spoiler: It didn't :(

For me on my M1 MacBook Pro, it started after installing the 15.4 update. Shows rated 16+ which I could watch happily on my iPhone or smart TV wouldn't show on my laptop. Everything updated, all cache and app settings reset, signed out and in again, restarted the laptop, checked my account settings, tried on another M1 MacBook Air but still the same issues persist. Clearly amidst the myriad of security patches and fixes, this was one issue not tackled with the latest 15.5 update. Perhaps 15.6 or will we have to wait until the MacOS release in September???
