Apple TV+ does not play content after age request on Mac

After updating to the latest version of macOS, the Apple TV app refuses to play age restricted content. I'm watching the Slow Horses show, and this is what happened when I tried to play the last episode of the 3rd season: I clicked the Play button, the app said that the content is for 16+, I clicked Continue, and then nothing happened. I try to click the Play button again, this time nothing happens at all - either I get an age confirmation dialogue, nor video playback. I'm 29 years old, almost 30, so the age should not be the problem. I tried to restart the app and Mac, clear app cache, check age restriction settings on the Mac, family sharing settings (I'm the admin), download the show, open it offline, without success.

I have two Macs both signed in with my Apple Account, the problem happens on both of them. The Apple TV app on my iPhone and iPad works as expected, it plays back the age restricted shows. Does anyone have any ideas what else can I do to resolve the problem?

If it plays on iPhone and iPad, then that (matching?) Apple Account’s age setting is not the issue here.

Macs may have addition custom lowering conditions set for content, through:

System Settings﹥Screen Time﹥[ʀᴇsᴛʀɪᴄᴛɪᴏɴs] Content and Privacy﹥Off|On ﹥[if On:] Store Restrictions﹥ᴀʟʟᴏᴡᴇᴅ ᴄᴏɴᴛᴇɴᴛ﹥Movies [set minimum age/rating] | TV Show [set minimum age/rating] | …

Macs or other Apple devices that are managed through MDM/corporate or edu deployment can have additional restrictions set by the organization that manages these devices. Apple Platform Deployment - Apple Support

I've logged a support ticket with Apple about this issue yesterday.

Some of the things we tried: logging out of apple tv, logging back in. Setting up a completely new profile, logging into apple tv. Starting the laptop in safe-mode, logging into Apple Tv.

Nothing worked. The issue appears to just be TV shows, MA15+ movies would play without issue.

Apple are going to escalate it and get back to me on Wednesday, but had said that no one else had raised this particular issue with them yet - so I'm half-expecting it to be an issue with me... they did suggest I do a complete reinstall of Sequoia, but I said I'd prefer not to at this stage, as it's working in my browser and other devices, so not super critical for me, but it sounds like the next logical step if they can't reproduce it on their side... I'm in Australia too. I think the MA15+ is an Australia thing.

Little addition - besides the workaround to run Apple TV+ via the website (requires opening in new tab, to not redirect to the app) - on my iPad Pro 12.9" 2015 1. Gen. i can watch as usual (it is limited to iPadOS 16.7.x - so i guess that's pointing to either the OS or the version of Apple TV+ being the culprit). None the less, i am not so hesitant anymore to cancel my Apple One subscription, this is an absolute no-go.

I have the same issue as well. Won't work on my MacBook Pro (either via Apple TV app, or via browser), but does work on my iPhone and an Apple TV 4K. It's only any content that asks for age confirmation, everything else plays fine. I have no parental controls enabled on my account.

Could it be a country based issue? I'm in Australia. Wondering if anyone else is the same?

Similar issue here in Germany:

TV shows which are rated >= 16 don't play on macOS (15.4.x). Using the TV app on the iPhone works (same account). Episodes from the same show which are rated 12+ play without issues. Screen Time is off (but enabling doesn't make a difference). Birth date in the Apple Account should indicate I'm done with adolescence :-D

This behaviour started end of March, perhaps after the macOS 15.3.2 update? At the beginning of March I was still able to watch something like Slow Horses. MDM is not an issue either – also happens on different Macs for me (both 15.4).

Same experience. Contacted Apple Support and received a support case code, the experience was without hesitation, glacially slow and painful. I'd sooner stick pins in my eyes than go through that again.

Seduced by the $3.99 for 3 months offer here in Australia I subscribed, watched some stuff on the TV App on my Macbook Pro running 15.4.1 that I updated yesterday. I chose to watch "Number One on the Call Sheet. Watched Part 1 no issues, Part 2 a pop up presented wanting to confirm I am over 16, the content is marked as 15+ only. I confirmed this and nothing. Thinking I had somehow confirmed I was under 16 I entered a state of panic trying to find a solution, which led me here. Exploring more programmes and films it turns out, as others have said, that no 15+ content is watchable at all. Apple TV hardware works fine, iPad works fine, iPhone works fine, Apple TV on Macbook is broken. Share your frustration folks.

I spent 3 + hours on the phone with several apple representatives to try to find a solve. Paola was very helpful but couldn't fix the problem. They have called twice to follow up, each time the representative couldn't hear me on my end. that was the end of apple support team trying to help me with the issue. I tried the work around of using a private safari browser to watch, it works, however the video stops every 2 minutes or so. I'm pretty much ready to cancel my apple subscription at this point. I am definitely asking for my money back.

(Australia) Still happening with 15.5 update. I've spent all evening trying to figure this out, I was driving myself mad. Was baking when the notification popped up and though I thought i'd clicked "yes" to "are you 15 or older" I convinced myself I must have miss-clicked no. The same as what others have said on here, my phone Tv works just fine, my iPad too, its JUST my mac. Scoured all the different types of "settings" for Tv, Apple ID, and my mac. Tried to change restrictions (which were not where I was told they were) in screen time but that did nothing. Double and triple checked my age was correct on my apple ID, logged out and back in twice, shut down my computer and turned it back on several times. I then contemplated throwing my computer out the window and just buying myself a windows laptop instead. I decided to take a break, step back and cool down for a minute. Crawled into bed, thought one more crack before sleeping can't hurt, and found this page. By the gods is this simultaneously a relief and disappointing, i've updated to the latest and still no change. But at least I know I'm not the only one who was half driven to insanity over this.

After spending two hours with customer service—who had no idea what was wrong with my MacBook—they eventually left me on my own to reinstall macOS and see if the issue persisted. Guess what? Nothing changed.

I’m in the same situation as many of you: after seeing the “Are you over 15?” prompt and answering; I’m now unable to watch any content rated 15+. I even started questioning whether I had clicked the wrong button.

While trying everything I could, I saw the age verification prompt again. I got excited, thinking I was close to solving the issue, and clicked “Yes” calmly and confidently—but still, nothing changed.

Yes, I have an iPhone that plays age-restricted content just fine. Yes, I live in Australia. And yes, my MacBook Air is an M1 running macOS Sequoia 15.5.

At least now that I know I’m not the only one, I feel a bit of relief.
