System Data taking up 1 TB on my iPhone and not freeing up space

What explains system data taking up so much space?

Currently my System Data is 1.02 TB (and increasing by the day). I definitely used about 1 TB before I noticed this problem. But no more.

Currently by Available space is 30.82 GB (and shrinking by the day). There must be a better solution than restoring the device. Especially a large device (my primary phone) that takes significant time to restore fully.

I’ve read that the system will remove it when I need it, but that is not happening for me. For example, I have a 2TB iPhone, and when trying to use Final Cut Camera, it says my device is full. Meaning the system is not freeing up the space for me. Screenshots included.

System Data (formerly referred to as "Other") can pop up like a charm, even without using it in overhaul, per se.

For the note, way-back-when-in-the-day, I called over-the-phone about a big grey bar popping up all of a sudden on my iPhone 6. I gave Apple a call, and went,"What in the world happened? Where'd all this big grey bar come from?". Apple showed me through screensharing how to fix it. And that's the year that I authored my User Tip on clearing "Other". Made a few additions edits to it when System Data came about, and then authored one for that. So, it's way more ancient of a post than the date provided of first reply shown even is.

I don't disagree with any of that. Not all experts go straight for backup and restore to clean system data like you and I do, citing some optimistic self-cleaning baloney. Cleaning System Data for iPhones is like defragging is/was for Windows PCs, a design flaw.

System data in my personal experience only increases gradually over time, but more rapidly in beta testing. To create 1TB of junk needs a severely badly written app surely? Or intense unrelenting gaming maybe. I was interested in why the OP needed a monster phone. I get by with daily life with a 64GB SE and iCloud.

Hmmm. Could it be an Apple app? It would be hilarious to delete every app, some I need, most I don’t tbh, only to have an empty phone with same bug. I fear that’s where I’m headed.

I don’t download a lot of “new” apps. Meaning, I went from the 16 to the 17 and didn’t change much. I didn’t suddenly start downloading new apps. I basically just used what I already had. I didn’t change a thing but iOS. Admittedly it could still be a 3rd party app doing this.

my device failed to update to 26.2.1 via Mac mini yesterday. So I was forced to restore in the middle of a work week. Then I tried to update to 26.3 via Mac and that also failed (stalled). I had to erase the device and restore it a second time.

I’m currently waiting for iCloud restore to finish. There’s 422GB of system data visible and the restore isn’t complete. Never seen that before: huge system data before a restore finishes.

is it possible I have a defective device? My software updates often stall with the progress bar at 99.9%. And I am not impatient. I waited 5 hours the first time (26.0) and 12 hours the second time (26.1).

sorry this is turning in to rant. I’m going to stop and check out the other commenters post. Thanks man.

Interesting. I don’t game at all. Anymore. Those were the first apps to be deleted. No gaming in practice and no gaming installs (since maybe 2024).

I installed a GoPro app over the holidays and let it “auto create” videos from a carefully selected and curated album. I was sure that was the cause: ai edited videos. So I deleted that app (after games). That was only new app added to workflow or pipeline.

everything else is standard camera work. Meaning nothing I wasn’t doing in iOS 18. I don’t even edit videos on the phone. I do that on iPad Pro. I don’t use iCloud Photos either. Just shared albums.

I’ve never ran beta on my daily driver. I do have beta on an old iPhone. That device has 1.07 gb system data fwiw.

i tried adjusting my system clock, smh, after reading that worked on Reddit. I regret that greatly. It screwed up a timekeeping app I use for work. I have to correct that timekeeping app manually. Daily. Will never do that again.

Ridding of System Data on a Mac:

Clean Install:

The only permanent fix of this phenomenon is to backup your Mac's data to a Time Machine Backup, and then erase your hard drive, using APFS as the format type. Rather than restoring from the backup, you'll have to grab items using Migration Assistant. Get your license(s) back by contacting the Developer(s) of your software installation(s), requesting new keys.

Use Finder to Clean in your Current Install:

Resetting your Mac anes is pain staking work, and I've been through that in the past. But, as for now, you can clear this all out using Finder. Use my User Tip: How to Use Finder to Clear “System Data" on a Mac - User Tip. It may be time consuming but, once you perform this a few times, it goes by pretty quick.

If it was an Apple App, we'd all be having system data ballooning out of control. After all, we all have pretty much the same Apple apps. A hassle for sure, but you need to follow the advice The Littles and LD150 offered.

I am currently following yours and LD150s advice to backup and restore while deleting apps. So far the fix is only temporary.

its just been an endless cycle of repeating the steps.

I am seeing a few common words like “temporary fix” and “desperate” in other similar threads. I’m sure you can imagine the time and effort people with this bug are expending.

In just updated to 26.3 and my umpteenth restore is complete. Fingers crossed I won’t have to repeat the cycle again if I do, I’ll come back here and share for the record.
