Lion Cursor Bug

Does anyone else have the bug in Lion where the cursor will sometimes shoot to a corner of the screen? I'm using a Magic Mouse with my Macbook Pro and from what I've seen it will sometimes happen when the mouse is moving from one window to another one and then it will just go all the way across the screen to the edge in the direction I was moving the cursor.

Unfortunately WorkingConcept's solution has not worked for me, having tried it step-by-step twice now. I have an iMac 27 with 8GB memory and a second Cinema display 24, and I've now just had to disable my beloved Tragic Macpad since it has an evil mind of its own. Simply dragging the cursor over icons in the dock launches many of them--without clicking any of them. Deleting just one message in Mail's Inbox is the most dangerous risk, since the action continues to delete other messages in line. And as others have reported here and elsewhere, the unintentional dragging of windows is also problematic, as is watching that poor, crazy cursor flying all over the screen like a zombie housefly on a destructive mission.

It's impossible to get any real work done now, so I've reverted to the USB mouse. For what it's worth this behavior also occurs with the wireless Magic Mouse. Apple Support even had me clear my P-RAM but that didn't work wither. I'm desperate for a solution here, Apple, as are many of us.

I forgot about this thread, and it turns out I'm still having the problem. A restart always seems to fix it, though temporarily. For whatever reason, mounting a Transmit (virtual FTP) disk immediately intensifies the problem. I doubt it's the app, because the problem persists even with the disk is unmounted and Transmit is closed.

One potentially helpful clue is a kernel error message that roughly coincides with the cursor jumps:

IOHIDSystem cursor update overdue. Resending.

Check your own console logs and see if you're seeing the same thing. Googling this error message will reveal World of Warcraft and Starcraft II threads about the same Lion-related problem. So far, I've been unable to find a magic fix. I've just been restarting when it gets really bad. This is of course silly, but is better than working all day with an erratic cursor.

hrmmm... I've had this problem as well and posted earlier about it. Switching from bluetooth -> laser mouse helped a *lot*, but it seems that the problem is indeed still there. The laser mouse apparently has more bandwidth into the computer(?), so when it flicks around you're delivered only a glancing blow - on bluetooth however, it's nearly unusable.

Current setup:

* Apple bluetooth keyboard

* Logitech M315 mouse with USB nub

The bluetooth mouse is a "Razer Pro Click" - great reviews on Amazon. No symptoms

until the Lion upgrade.

I'm considering buying a different bluetooth mouse in order to rule out my own.

Tried PRAM and SMC re-initialization, no difference. Here's a grep of my logs, note

that this machine is used as a laptop and clamshell (desktop) mode at different times

every day:

I've never seen this issue prior to Lion.

Using the same hardware setup on Leopard and Snow Leopard, I've never had an issue where the cursor jumped to the corners of the display.

This almost instantly showed up on Lion.

I have seen various posts on this topic, suggesting a variety of solutions, but none have worked. I've seen the issue posted from users with various Mac systems, so it doesn't seem to be system related.

This appears to be a bug in Lion.

I suggest posting to Apple, so that it will get addressed in the first Lion update.

Thanks, musicwind, tried that and so many other ideas posed by others. The only thing that lets me get any work done at all is a corded mouse, and if you've been using your MT for any length of time, you can imagine how challenging that is.

This is just a Lion update issue, plain and simple. I submitted Apple Feedback on this last week, and even the Apple Tech I worked with on the phone before then wasn't aware of it (or at least didn't acknowledge it) during the hour we tried to resolve it.

Aug 21, 2011 12:35 AM in response to empraxis

Interestingly enough, I've encountered this cursor issue as well....I recently found a 17" Apple Studio Display my parents had lying around but weren't using. I picked it up and dropped by the Apple Store at Corporate here in Cupertino to get a ADC to DVI with power supply; they had one lying around in back and just gave it to me for free actually...kudos to Apple on that. Anyhow, I hooked it up as a 2nd display to my new Mac Mini just for fun. Immediately noticed afterward that the cursor was jumping all over the place with no rhyme or reason. Obviously, I unhooked the display, but over the last week the problem has persisted. I was just set to leave my office & go to see a Genius about it at a local Apple store, but went into my display preferences and noticed the Apple Studio Display option was still present under the color settings. I went into library, into the Color Sync display settings and deleted the Apple Studio Display file as well as my preferences.plist file...restarted and presto - my cursor doesn't jump around anymore. Now I highly doubt my fix will speak to the problem any of you are having but what I am wondering if it's some sort of issue in display/color settings & the new Lion OS. Just a thought....either way, Apple has definitely dropped the ball on this one. I know how frustrating it was getting for me, the cursor issues - it was getting to the point of being unusable; so I hope they do they get this one fixed ASAP.

Hello! A few weeks after noticing this problem, I can now confirm the cursor jump occurs during heavy network access: Dropbox sync, iDisk or Transmit disk mounting.

Each time I now notice my cursor jumping, I check my network status and see heavy activity. I don't understand how the problem is related but these are my observations.

Has any Apple official looked into this thread ?

Sep 1, 2011 7:56 AM in response to JoshTN

On mine, switching from a bluetooth mouse to a laser mouse seemed to help a lot - it is at least much more usable now, almost cannot notice it. However, it does indeed still flick around - it just recovers faster with the laser mouse for some reason. Totally annoying to have that USB nib plugged in all the time though, when I paid for working bluetooth built into the computer.

Has anyone gone back to SL and seen this problem 100% go away? Thinking I might switch back too. I guess Apple would like to see us on trackpads but my productivity is terrible with a trackpad compared to a mouse.

Sep 1, 2011 11:38 AM in response to JoshTN

very interesting. I have a dev friend who downloaded the Lion Gold Master, which was installed on one machine, then bought the retail Lion and installed it on another. The machine with the retail Lion had the cursor problem all the time, the one with the Gold Master did not.

He said he then installed the Gold Master on the machine that was having the cursor problems and they went away instantly.
