macbook air with lion not waking up from sleep

I purchase a third generation macbook air (july 2011) with preinstalled lion. It is slow to wake up from sleep (10 seconds). Sometimes when it falls asleep with shell open it wont wake back up with touch of keys (keyboard lights up but screen does not respond). If I close it then reopen, it wakes up. Problem seems intermittent.

A work around for me is to momentarily hold the Power Button. It then wakes from sleep. It doesn't happen all the time though.

Took my 2 day old MBA that would not reliably wake from sleep into local Genius Bar. Had also had problem with what seemed to be random freezing (no beachball, just unresponsive keyboard/trackpad), often after successful wake from sleep. Long story short, I am typing this on a different new MBA, it froze soon after the tech opened and he was quick to process a return/replacement. He said it is likely a bad connection on the logic board for keyboard/trackpad - or some sort of hardware issue.

Since it was only 2 days old I didnt lose much in the way of data, etc. Only bad news is that this one has the Toshiba SSD and my original had the Samsung which I understood to be a faster drive.

11" MacBook Air with i5 core and Lion 10.7.1 preloaded won't wake up after going to sleep while shell open. Won't wake up even by holding power button. Problem is intermittent for me as well. I haven't tried closing the shell and then opening it and trying to wake it. The next time it happens, I'll try that. In the meantime, AppleCare person had me run the long hardware test (press and hold D just as the bootup chime sounds to access). It passed. Next step is to reinstall the operating system.

I have a new Macbook Air mid-2011 with lion and I've been having two issues on the computer with barely no additional sofware installed:

1- My computer does not wake up at all after being left open. No screen appears, I have to force shut down. (as some in this thread)

2- I have intermittent kernel panics at the first moment I boot, or when I try to shut down, or when I try to wake up the computer...

I'm in the process of sorting this out with Apple customer service and technicians.

The issue I'm talking about also applies to regular, battery charged, less than 60 minutes of inactivity sleep mode, although AFAIK, deep sleep is only invoked when the battery is fully drained. The sleep process in periods of inactivity longer than 60 minutes should behave regularly and not necessarily invoke deep sleep, if the battery still holds a usable charge. At least that's how my old MacBook Pro behaved; it was very noticeable when you were waking from deep sleep, since reading 'sleepimage' was way slower and the OS had to put up some graphics to let you know it was doing stuff. Maybe they changed this behavior in the MBA, but I don't know.

Anyways, this happens with regular sleep mode.

The MacBook Air is a bit different. That's how standby can last up to 30 days. If it is unplugged and inactive for more than 60 minutes, it goes into deep sleep and takes a few seconds to wake up. If it is plugged in, or unplugged less than 60 minutes, it should stay in normal standby mode and wake up within 1-2 seconds. Note that if you have encrypted your drive using FileVault it takes a little bit more time and adds a login screen.

If it's happening with regular sleep, maybe have it looked at if the upcoming 10.7.2 update doesn't fix it.

I haven't had any failures to wake myself, but the SLOW wake I see (in 10.7 and 10.7.1) can be tested/demonstrated as follows:

1. Sleep from the Apple menu (or by the button or shutting the lid; but the act of moving the lid itself takes time and confused the issue).

2. Count to 10 (just to be fair and be certain it's fully asleep--but obviously not in deep sleep yet) then hit any key to wake the machine.

3. Compare how long it takes to wake on a 2011 MacBook Air with SSD, vs. an older Mac. My 3-year old non-SSD MacBook Air (Snow Leopard) wakes nearly instantly in this test. Less than half a second, generally. My brand new SSD Air takes maybe 3 seconds, somtimes more. It's annoying when you want to make a quick change before running out the door, say—plus, a new system shouldn't be noticeably slower than one so old.
