macbook air with lion not waking up from sleep

I purchase a third generation macbook air (july 2011) with preinstalled lion. It is slow to wake up from sleep (10 seconds). Sometimes when it falls asleep with shell open it wont wake back up with touch of keys (keyboard lights up but screen does not respond). If I close it then reopen, it wakes up. Problem seems intermittent.

I have this same problem which which was aptly described "if I move the mouse, the cursor "paints" in pixelated fashion, like a jagged snake. I just realized it will "paint" the user icons, as though scraping a film off of the screen. Then I am able to click on my user icon and login normally."

My MacBook Air is

Serial Number C02GG47VDJWR

Will someone at APPLE please see this and HELP?

I have forwarded your message to the Apple support person I've been dealing with. I haven't heard back from him since he said he was going to show my videos to an engineer.

I am still having the snake issue. I have also tried creating a new user and using the computer all day as that user, with just the browser running. Same thing happens every time the computer sleeps for more than a few minutes.

What support efforts have you made? Let's keep this going here so others, and maybe Apple, can follow along.

Thank you very much. I am in Hong Kong where I bought this MB Air on 10/10 and went to Singapore - I discovered it there. Returned to HK on Nov 6, brought it in to the reseller Nov 7 and got it back Nov 9 after they had reinstalled Lion. Within 24 hours I had the same 'snake' or 'screen scribbler' so I decided to call Apple Support and they called me back that evening to troubleshoot.

We did 2 resets, moved the Caches folder to my desktop, removed all my login items. That was, I think, Friday, Nov 11.

I just haven't had time to call them back and as I am leaving on an 8am flight tomorrow for Singapore and going on to Delhi on Nov 17, I am not sure when I will have time to get on a phone for an extended period to chat with Apple Support.

My latest pic is attached - taken approx 9pm in Hong Kong, Nov 14 (we are 12 hrs ahead of Eastern time).

Appreciate any help you can give me. Again, many thanks.

hey guys, so I bought a new macbook air 1.8 after returning my old one. I was one of the original posters on this issue, and decided to wait a bit. Low and behold I don't have the issue on my new MacBook Air. When I was buying it I asked the guy about whether this one will have it, and he said Apple has been aware of a hardware issue which caused this, and that the late 2011 macbook airs actually have some different hardware. If this is true it doesn't help anyone who was an early adopter like I was, but that seems to be at least some resolution to this.

well.. i called apple support, and by empty cache, add user account, delete user account and power off, hold power off button for 5 sec, release it, close lid, wait for a minute, open lid, the time to wake was acceptable (3 sec) for approx 2 startups. Now on my 3 startup its back to 10 sec wake.. This is how it goes. Open lid, after 6 sec the light on keyboard lits, after 8 sec the screen lits, and on the 9 or 10 sec i can move the mouse... AHHHHH... My macbook Pro 2,66 Core 2 duo (witch i sold) was faster.. ****** You Air.. You are slow wake!! Get up in the morning for crying out loud.. Cupertino!! You made a sleeping machine..

😟

This slow wake is not a normal function of deep sleep, because it happens even when plugged into power, and even when the machine has only been a sleep for a minute. (Though it might be a related bug, like the machine ALWAYS doing deep sleep.)

Under no circumstances does my 2011 Air ever wake instantly the way my other, years-old pre-Lion Macs do. (But happily, it does always wake!)

It sounds like you have a different issue, since it appears to always go into deep sleep. Try running the following command in Terminal: "pmset -g | grep hibernatemode".

It should come up "hibernatemode 3". If it comes up "hibernatemode 1" that could mean that it is always going into deep sleep.

To change the mode, type "sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3". If you never want it to go into deep sleep, type "sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0" but be aware that this will be like old Macs, and thus it will lose about 10% of the battery each night if left unplugged.

The new Airs can't run Snow Leopard (it lacks proper driver support). What I would recommend if it always starts slowly is to apply the combo update to 10.7.2 rather than the delta update. Maybe use Lion Restore to reinstall Lion as that might help. Sometimes the delta updates don't apply properly.

My sister and I both have mid-2011 MacBook Airs. I have FileVault activated, so mine starts up a little more slowly, but both start up nearly instantly if it is plugged in. When I leave mine unplugged for an hour, it slows down but still starts up in about 6-7 seconds. IIRC, on my 2010 MacBook Air, when it went into deep sleep it used to start up in about 4-5 seconds.

I thought this might be useful for all of you who share my problem.

Nov 24, 2011:

I returned from my trip and brought my MacBook Air to the Apple Store in Hong Kong (day before yesterday); they took one look and said they would repair it so I have left it with them until I return from my next trip (leaving tomorrow). According to the repair order they have to change the MLB (Main Logic Board?).

Hi, all. Well, this is the latest word from Apple:

My case (the jagged snake/cursor that wipes the screen after waking, revealing the login screen) was bumped up to a senior advisor, who alerted an engineer. The advisor called me yesterday and said this is getting highest priority at Apple, and they expect a software fix soon. He said it would be in a regular software update, probably not as the only patch in the update. So he said I should look at the details of any update in the near future, to see if it's addressing this issue. I asked if it would be called "MacBook Air Snake," and he said, "Ah, probably not." 👿 He thought it might be called something like "Mouse pixel trailing on waking," or something similar.

I would be very happy if this could be fixed via software rather than having to send the computer in for repair or replacement. I love my MBAir in every other respect!

I asked when we could expect the update, and he said it could be a day or two or several weeks. Will keep you posted.
