Will Siri work on the iPhone 4?
People have already managed to port the Siri beta into an iphone 4 and it is working flawlessly. The only issue is that the Siri servers reject API calls from iPhone 4. As the author says:

Perhaps the biggest news here is that we’ve determined that there is no technical reason for Apple not to allow Siri to run on the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4 hardware can support the Siri artificial intelligence system, as the A4 processor is said to be powerful enough. We are not entirely sure why Apple is making Siri an iPhone 4S exclusive but it could be due to special microphone support, or because the A5 may allow it to run slightly quicker. After all, Apple is the company who blocked custom wallpapers on the iPhone 3G because the animation is slightly slower than the animation on newer iOS devices.
I think that it is not a good business practice to crimple an existing product that has been released in under an year in order to sell slightly more powerfull device. Why don't you make something that really uses most of the new A5 chip? And what whould that be? Game? GPS assistant? Better iOS - OSx integration? Don't know, and frankly it's not my job to think about this. I just want to have a fully supported device and to buy the new generation of the same piece of hardware when they actually bring something new to the marked. I've bought the original iphone, 3g, 4. I hope they will improve the 5th generation enough to make it worth buying, not just to apply some mkt tricks.
I'm now very confused. I have an iPhone 4 purchased from Verizon last year on the very first day they were available. I have been using Siri for months. I can use voice ot ask questions, however it just gives answers in text. (where it appears that the NEW Siri answers in voice as well).
I used it as recent as Friday evening (Oct 14) but then just a few hours later that same night the app itself launched and (says - in text only) "I'll be right with you"... and then (says) "Sorry, a problem occurred receiving response from the server."
Three days later I am still getting the same response. Has this been completely discontinued or shut down?
Thanks.
I have the Siri Assistant app on my iPhone 4 for about a year and it worked fine until I did the 5.0 update. Now I am getting an error message "Sorry, a problem occurred receiving response from server." In this forum I see comments that Siri can only work on a 4s which is obviously incorrect. The update clearly blocked the app from working as if they are trying to encourage people to go buy a new phone. That is the first time I have seen Apple stoop to such a despicable tactic.
You did not read the thread: the earlier Siri and the one on the 4S are not the same.... The one on the 4 is stopped and no longer available. The one on the 4S is part of the system.
well, I believe that it will work and I know everyone is following whatever Apple is telling us, However... Can somebody explain me how the app was working prior to the release of siri on the iphone 4s and apple disactivated the app.I think it wokrs, but as everything apple does. they want to make sure we sell or give away our iphone 4 and invest more money on the new one. I am going to way until the iphone 5 or 6 comes out. I believe my Iphone 4 it a great phone and it still brand new.
Seb85, Apple is NOT "greedy": it is now part of the system, and thus at no cost.
And again: the hardware of the iPhone 4 can not run Siri5 without hacking (or maybe a firmware update).
Siri not working has nothing to do with hardware, and Twitter is now part of the "system", what if they stopped the twitter app from working, what if they bought Facebook next year, and said you can only use Facebook on the iPhone 5??
I still think Siri will be available on the iPhone 4 once the hype of the 4S, has settled down, and they have sold enough of them.
I certainly hope so, I personally have been using Siri on my iPhone 4 for months now and love it. I don't think that it is good business to provide a service and then say you can't have it. At the very least they should support the version that worked previously. They have sold over 4 million iPhone 4S'. Maybe now?
I miss my little assitant!
I'm not trying to be difficult. I do know that the New Siri and the older one are not the same. I did not, however, know that Apple was stopping the older one without any notice. Like I said, I used it Friday evening and then a few hours later it started giving me that message ("Sorry, a problem occurred receiving response from the server.") and hasn't worked since. I am just suprised that it would just stop suddenly, seemingly, without any notice that it was being discontinued. If there was such a message, then I missed it.
I do remain one of Apple's biggest fans. As an older graphic designer, I have worked on nothing but Apple products since they became available.
My question to every single one of apple fans... Myself Include it....why we complaint and go thru all these nonsense when this solution of the problem is to stop buying their gadgets and their technology. I think that we are making such a big deal about something that we knew it was going to happen. we have been dealing with the adobe flash player for years and they have not make any deal to make their customer happy.
One thing had occurred to me and was reinforced by a post I saw elsewhere. Given what happened to iCloud when the floodgates were opened and the lackluster performance was expereinced soon after (I still get login errors occasionally), it seems as though perhaps it is not hardware on the phone that is the limiting factor, but the server load that is currently the issue. Think about it for a second...you have the hot new voice control service that can make or break your new sex appeal. It will likely choke if all iPhone 4 and iPad 2 devices are allowed to play with it, and you need a public group to test it, but in a limited fashion. You have a new phone going out there and you know that you've only got a few million to sell at the beginning. Makes logical sense to limit the code so that it only functions on those devices so you don't blow the new service out of the water on Day 1. I personally would have said that "It's coming to the other phones" but that's just me, and they said Facetime would probably come to Windows. Broken promises hurt companies just as much as any other relationship. Don't get me wrong, I want to get my hands on Siri, but I want a Siri that works, and doesn't tell me "I can't get a connection to the server right now"....kinda like how folks on the 4S were getting the other day. Would be nice if a little confirmation came from Apple that they expected to have it working on iPad 2's or regular iPhone 4's in the near future.
@ Marvin83 they will restrict your access

Some developers still working right now on port Siri to iPhone 4... it looks great but, i hope that it will be available soon for all of us, with native speed and great stability. I cant wait for talk with Siri through my iPhone 4
Whatever, After Steve Jobs death and this "stupid exclusivity for iPhone 4S" i believe in hackers and other Deveopers than the Apple Stuff... pitifully
Yes it will work with the iphone 4. It does not require they A5 chip. Apple just chooses to make you get a 4s if you want it.
