The iCloud IMAP server “p99-imap.mail.me.com” rejected the password for user XXXX

p99-imap.mail.me.com is not editable in my Mail.com configuration. Is this just a temporary glitch?

This might have worked - time will tell but everything suddenly came online after the following.

- I went to System Prefs > Mail, Contacts, Calendars (not iCloud)

- The "Mail & Notes" was unchecked/blurred.

- I checked this option - and then suddenly everything worked.

- I checked the Mail account prefs in the Mail.app and now i had 2 iCloud accounts showing.

- I deleted 1 but both disappeared.

- I "+" a new account and added with my @me address (i have a @mac) and it just 'worked'.

- Mail added all the necessary settings and checked the 'login' 'imap' etc - and just logged in and started downloading mail, sent, etc etc.

So far so good.

I suggest people got to System Prefs and check the "Mail, Contacts, Calendar" pref icon (not iCloud) and see if "Mail & Notes" is checked as 'on'.

Hope this helps and also hope it continues to work for me <fingers crossed>

Just got off the phone with Apple support. Here is what solved my problem.

The tech support person had me restart my system. Then we went through the steps below:

1) First log into iCloud via Safari and check that you have mail, calendar and contacts data in iCloud

2) Don't do any of the other steps unless #1 is OK - you must call support if #1 is not OK. There is probably somthing else wrong with yor iCloud account. Just go on line and schedule an outbound call from Apple that fits your scheudle. Next:

3) Go into system preferences, and go to mail, contacts and calendars

4) Delete your iCloud account by highlighting it and hitting the "-" sign at the bottom of the column. Answer yes to delelte the data on your mac - there are two questions.

5) The click on the iCloud icon on the right column and login with your user name and password

6) Check the iCloud services on screen 1 and then on screen 2

7) Close out of system preferences

8) Open contacts and make sure contacts are populating

9) Open mail and make sure mail is downloading - may take a minute. Once it begins to populate, send yourself an email to check. It should come back in a second or two. Quit mail and then restart mail. Then send yor self another test message. You are now good to go with mail and iCloud.

10) Open calendar and make sure it has populated

This all worked for me - can tell the Apple support team is slammed, but my support person was professional and helped out a lot. If you have any doubts, just schedule a support call via the Apple support page and get help there. My wife is definetly happier that her email is back up and working. Good luck everyone.

I cannot send anything from Apple Mail, but I can receive. I have verified all settings from the Apple Help note and run network diagnostics (all fine)

Logging on to iCloud and I can send and receive. I can send and receive from my iPhone.

Yes, I am using 10.6.8 but the imap and smtp settings are not dependent on OS. The Help Note describes the settings as being universally applicable.

As mentioned I have changed them to the official iCloud settings rather than legacy MobileMe settings.

Each time the error is that the SMTP server rejected the password.

Again, hoping this is a temporary glitch.

Hi All,

The only solution to this error is by calling iCloud support via express lane for iOS5. Once you get a representative, asked them to escalate you to the mobile me division. Only senior tech advisors can help. It seems the error is being caused by an aliases issue. Dont waist your time changing your settings. It wont fix it.

They need to reset your account and this will remove the user name/password/smtp server/ unknow user errors you are receiving!
