The playback on iPad 2 podcasts is stuck in 1/2 speed. Cannot figure out where to change setting to go back to normal. There was a 1x, 2x and 1/2x playback control button in prior iOS versions. Is it gone now, or am I just overlooking it?

Exactly, especially when all those features are still there on the iPhone version. Makes zero sense.
I've left my feedback. Half of my iPad use is listening to podcasts. Now it takes me 4x what it used to to listen to a similar number of podcasts. This makes 50% of the iPad's utility to me unusable. I really hope they'll get this sorted very, very soon.
look at boglott tip in this tread, his solution enable the ipad to play podcast at normal speed.

Was shocked to discover removal of 2X playback. I too listen to things at increased speeds to save time. Wish I had not upgraded to iOS 5 on iPad 2

I just submitted to the feedback link. This is a rather shocking oversight on Apple's part, and needs to be addressed ASAP. As others have said, new ain't always better. The interface in v4 was fine.
Just did a Google search and there is an iTunes app called "Speedup Player" that appears to be a workaround. There are both "Lite" and "Pro" versions.
EDIT: at first I thought it was an add-on for the music app in the iOS, but it's actually a separate app for playback. It has a slide function that allows a range of speeds from 0.5x - 2.5x. This might be the "ticket" until this is addressed by Apple in the iOS itself.

Try iCatcher! - great app. I am now using it and I like it better then the previous music app. I can download all my podcast without using itunes and I can play at 2x. Also has a 30 second rewind and fastfoward button. I do not like paying for a program that I already had - but this works well
After you listen to a podcast in ICATCHER can you tell you have listened to it and then delete it even after you listened to several other podcasts.

Yes - after you listen to a podcast in iCatcher! it will delete the file. You also have an option to keep the file and delete latter. I really like the program. It works better then the original apple program - at least for podcast.
Add one more disgruntled user to the list - all my podcasts now play at half-speed and the playback speed option has gone missing after upgrading my iPad 1 to iOS 5.
This is unfortunate because I prefer to use my iPad over my iPhone (which has retained the playback speed option) as the iPad has a louder speaker. It is doubly so because the change seems intended. The new official iPad User Guide makes no mention of the playback speed option on the iPad, while every previous User Guide and the new ones for the iPhone and iPod Touch do. And while I'm all for a simpler interface and eliminating complicating features that most users don't use, this seems to be one that many people do, as evidenced by this thread.
Unfortunately, because of the intent that seems to be behind this "oversight", I doubt Apple will pay much attention to this thread until it reaches some greater critical mass. So, in addition to submitting feedback and encouraging others to do the same, please inform your favorite news source about this problem and this thread. Here a few I've submitted to:
I have the same problem. There does not appear to be a speed control like there used to be and still is on the iPhone. Really annoying. Methinks that iOS5 was not fully beta tested....

Assuming that is the page that starts "Playing songs and other audio", I can't see what on that page you are pointing out. There does not seem to be any mention of speed controls on that page, or indeed anywhere in the manual.
How do change the playback speed in iOS 5 for podcasts on iPad 2?
