Does Microsoft Visio work on MACs?

MAC - Machine Address Code not Media Access Control in the context the you stated your contention. If you are going to correct people...at least be correct. Media Access Control refers to the Cisco OSI model for networking, being the layer where MAC addresses reign supreme Layer 2 as it were. This may be a really old thread, but the desire for Visio on a Macintosh device is still quite in demand. Time to go download Virtual Box and do this Ubuntu style.

The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) basic reference model was developed and is maintained by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Hence, it is the ISO/OSI model. One of its components defines the Medium Access Control (MAC) service definition. The 48-bit MAC address space is globally managed by the IEEE. There is no such thing as "Machine Address Code"

Actually, you can use both Visio and MS Project (for those who use it) if you install Crossover on your Mac. Works pretty well (it's a bit slower and a few functions don't work - but I', happy with it) and you don't need to by Windows.

No need to pay for a Microsoft license at all for MS Project or even add additional workload to the Mac via Crossover. Use ProjectLibre instead: http://www.projectlibre.org/

To your response - yes, there are lots of alternatives. OmniGraffle is another that I like. They actually have a great suite of products that mirrors some of the MS products I am used to but that are not available for Mac.

But, my point was that if you want to continue using MS Visio or Project, then Crossover - at least for me - has been a great alternative. I tried Parallels and Boot Camp, but I actually do not like Windows - especially 8 - so Crossover has been great.

I agree. This is still a valid question that users are still researching. I think more and more people will start to migrate away from Windows (as I did) to iMac's, because of how horrible Windows 8 is. Obviously, with the mobile movement, a lot of people dont even have the traditional home desktop's anymore. But those that do will consider iMac's over Windows, and those "power" users expect, and need, the full suite of Office products, or something similiar that still provides those capabilities. I am a relatively new iMac user, so I appreciate the responses and recommendations of those that have been working with it longer.

Take a look at Libre Office, you get the functionality of Office Pro (exc Outlook but inc Access) plus MS Publisher, this thread contains several alternatives for Visio and Project.

It's free, so worth a look.

But those that do will consider iMac's over Windows, and those "power" users expect, and need, the full suite of Office products, or something similiar that still provides those capabilities.

If you can't let go of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, try the free "work-alike" LibreOffice, as Csound1 recommended.

If you want a combination Word Processor and simple Page Layout program, try Pages.

If you need a spreadsheet, but not necessarily Excel, with better graphics, try Numbers.

If you need presentation software with a bit more POP, try Keynote.

I have seen Keynote but have not really gotten into it yet and played around with it. Is it compatible with Powerpoint? Would I be able to create a presentation in keynote, email it to a customer and have them be able to view it in PPT?

Yes, Keynote can open PPT files and export to the same format. LibreOffice also has a fully compatible PPT module called Presentation.

And there are other choices, try them out.

LibreOffice is good, i dont like Pages and Numbers as they don't load fast and I simply cant get used to them.

Also, I'm paying for office 365 home each month, as I like ms word on windows (i use 2 computers). when i was using office and skype on my macbook pro both freezed my computer, but since i upgraded memory from 4 to 8 gb the performance is better.

For collaborative work or when i need to work on a same document from any device I use Google docs, they are a real gem for team work.

For diagramming I use ConceptDraw PRO, as it is crossplatform and neat.

As a networking engineer I am tied to Visio and use it every day. Moving to OnmiGraffle, etc, isn't an option for me.

The best solution i've found is... drum roll... to run a Windows VM (under VMWare Fusion in my case) and launch Visio from there.

Thanks for confirming (again) that Visio does not run on Mac operating systems, only Windows.

Hi all, I use Viso because of its simple ability to draw plans of houses etc and simply add doors, windows etc etc.

I would like to use viso on my mac, but we cant. so does anyone know of a simple program that is simular to visio
