IOS 5.1.1. update bug (Volume Control)

This thread concerns IOS 5.1.1. update and the subsequent loss of volume button functionality and use of internal speakers.

Please can someone help from the mac team!

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;

  1. When the volume buttons are pressed on the home screen i get "ringer" and the speaker symbol appear but nothing more (ie. +/- volume)
  2. When playing back from iTunes with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  3. When i playback Youtube content with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  4. With headphones plugged in sound is audible and volume buttons work.
  5. Whilst using voicemail, (no headphones connected) i can play the message through the speakers and control volume using side buttons.

What's the deal Mac Support? I have restored the phone twice and also given the headphone jack a good blow with Servisol Duster 101.

Thanks, P

I recently switched from Android to the 4S, and I must say I am questioning the switch now. I can't even use my iPhone to listen to music, so now I have to bring an extra ipod just so I have something to listen to when I ride the train every day! It would be one thing if Apple released a statement, or SOMETHING addressing this issue, but their silence is truly disheartening. I'm very much considering selling my 4s and getting a Nexus.

My problems:

Audio playback stops in the middle of a song (have to plug headphones back in)

Volume control doesn't work (just shows 'Ringer')

Sounds (games, keyboard clicks, etc) come through speaker at times, stop without warning

I've tried every fix imaginable short of a complete erase and restore. Heres hoping if we post enough about it SOMEONE at Apple will hear us!

I can't imagine waiting until potentially late summer just to listen to music on my iPhone.

Try resetting your settings from Settings-->General-->Reset-->Reset All Settings. This doesn't do anything to your apps really or to your phone data. But this seemed to have fixed the audio problem on my wife's 4S which had the exact same volume bar/buttons symptoms you describe. I just had to reset the location services and the wifi password. It still seems to have weird random issues with the side buttons not controlling the ringer volume, but if she goes to a video or plays a song and then back to home, those work again also. Way to go Microsoft...err I mean Apple.

Ah it's been so long since I had a glimmer of hope. Sad to say I just finished resetting all of my settings but still no sound and the fake dock volume selector. Happy the reset all thing worked for you but no improvement on my device. This is brutal. Does apple even read this site. I have sent multiple messages to the feedback site with no reply. Don't know how much longer I will tolerate this problem before I go buy a galaxy

Hi,

I have a similiar problem:

My iPhone 4S 32 GB (black) worked flawlessly until I updated to iOS 5.1.1. Since the update to iOS 5.1.1 the iPhone sometimes automatically reduces the volume right after unlocking the screen.

When the problem occurs the volume sign is seen on the screen (with only one square/lowest volume) and it does not disappear until I press one of the volume buttons.

Also the problem sometimes occurs when playing a movie or listening to music and adjusting the volume using the volume slider on the screen. For example I increase the volume and immediately the volume slider is set back to the previous state. I have to reset the volume using the slider several times until it stays where it should stay.

Seems like iOS 5.1.1 has some volume problems, right?! 😮
