IOS 5.1.1. update bug (Volume Control)

This thread concerns IOS 5.1.1. update and the subsequent loss of volume button functionality and use of internal speakers.

Please can someone help from the mac team!

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;

  1. When the volume buttons are pressed on the home screen i get "ringer" and the speaker symbol appear but nothing more (ie. +/- volume)
  2. When playing back from iTunes with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  3. When i playback Youtube content with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  4. With headphones plugged in sound is audible and volume buttons work.
  5. Whilst using voicemail, (no headphones connected) i can play the message through the speakers and control volume using side buttons.

What's the deal Mac Support? I have restored the phone twice and also given the headphone jack a good blow with Servisol Duster 101.

Thanks, P

Sooo, my problem was with my iPad, but same situation: downloaded 5.1.1, and lost any volume on MOST programs unless plugged it into earphones or speakers.

Took it to Apple.....short story: MUTE button was selected. I did not do it. Can it be that simple? Why did some programs play and others didn't?? Apple guy didn't say, but apparently all is working. Doesn't make sense, but that is what they said.

Worth a check, I suppose.

Experiencing the same issue beginning today. I updated my OS on Monday, didn't have any issue until this morning. Can't get the volume to work, unless headphones are plugged in, really bites when you're trying to make or receive a call. Have spent the last two hours trying to fix this issue (ie resetting, resyncing, etc). As for a mute button on the iPhone (I have the 3GS), the only mute button I'm aware of is the one used when on a call and I can't get to it unless on a call. Nothing found in settings, etc.

I hope the geeks at Apple are aware of this issue and working to fix this annoying problem within the next few days. This is ticking off alot of customers.

I never had a problem with 5.1.

This problem only started when I updated to 5.1.1.

No music audio

No audio in videos

No messages audio

I found you can get about 1 second of audio if you play audio and plug and unplug the dock cable into the phone and play around with the pause and play icon.

Apple might want to check this out

I can't go on missing txt messages because of no audio.

What are Apple doing about this software bug ????

Just noticed

double tap the home button - At the bottom swipe right twice.

this should now be showing the volume slider.

while the dock connecter is in the phone, press the dock connector a little harder into the phone.

You can see the volume slider dot come back for a second then go again.

repeat pressing the dock connector and you see the volume slider dot keep coming bak.

Is this a hardware fault then??

c'mon guys, you have here 50 different equipments complaining that when they updated to 5.1.1 the sound was lost! by coincidence these 50 guys got dust on their phone when updating? Or an hardware fault? Please, the evidences are clear.

Apple, wake up! an iphone without sound it's crap. Please address this issue ASAP. Have contacted support right after update, they didn't even bother to answer.

This is how you loose clients. Problems and bugs happen, but we need to trust you are trying to solve it to the best of your efforts.

I was skeptical when i read about the dust problem but I tried it (took a few goes to get it) and I haven't had a problem for a few days now, it's back to normal. I suggest everyone should give it a shot. Get a small stiff brush or toothbrush. I spoke to a friend and he had a similar problem on his iMac's SD card slot. Dust is the enemy with electronics.

Also, when you consider Apple sell 10+ million of these each quarter I think it could definitely be a coincidence this could happen to 50+ or even hundreds.

Ahhh cleaning... right.... that will do.... Yes its cynical.. Ofcourse....
like i didn't tried this...

I still have the same problems.. and it ***** big time!...

Now i'm thinking about to screw my phone open. but i'm also affaid that this is a big mistake to do...

Im sending apple an other feedback form... and i sigh one more time..

By the way.... Where does everybody come from? I'm from The Netherlands... maybe its locationproblem... well i'm guessing so you notice..
