IOS 5.1.1. update bug (Volume Control)

This thread concerns IOS 5.1.1. update and the subsequent loss of volume button functionality and use of internal speakers.

Please can someone help from the mac team!

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;

  1. When the volume buttons are pressed on the home screen i get "ringer" and the speaker symbol appear but nothing more (ie. +/- volume)
  2. When playing back from iTunes with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  3. When i playback Youtube content with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  4. With headphones plugged in sound is audible and volume buttons work.
  5. Whilst using voicemail, (no headphones connected) i can play the message through the speakers and control volume using side buttons.

What's the deal Mac Support? I have restored the phone twice and also given the headphone jack a good blow with Servisol Duster 101.

Thanks, P

Today i went to the Apple Store in my country..

They didn't fix te problem, but i've got another iphone 4S...

I made a back up last night, and even with this backup the sound works perfectly.

So i will say go to the Apple store and i really hope that they know an answer or that you will get another one.

Good Luck,

and i will follow this thread, because you never know.. ;-)

Mine is just 5 months old and I have the warranty... took my phone to apple store and they confirmed that its a known hardware issue and I can get my phone serviced/repalced.

New problem is I bought my phone in UK and currently I am back in India and seems Apple Policies only allow them to service ony in the country of purchase.... 😟 Have to send to UK Apple Store now 😟😟😟

Hi. I had the same issue. And it appeared and disappeared cuple of times at random.😠 (iPhone 4, purchaised on Nov'11)

ℹ Today I was so angry at my phone so I got a paper clip, straighten it and really "cleaned up" my charging spot. Scratched all of these metal elements on a bar inside the spot, severely. It helped 😮

Don't know for how long, but it's working for a half an hour now..

I firmly believe that it's a docking problem and not software. Just cleaning the dock with a new toothbrush sorts the problem most of the time. Some people have not changed their firmware and the problem has happened. If it were to be just a software problem then I doubt Apple would be quick to replace your iphone....DOCK PROBLEM WITH DIRT / DUST.

I believe the new Iphone will have a new smaller docking socket now.

I don't believe it is a docking problem,. This is just a software bug that ruins some hardwares.. I have done all suggested advices here and mine still not working..And if it is a docking problem what about those who they see the volume bar but still no sound? What abt those who can hear when the phone ring but can't hear when the play music? What about those who unlocked their phones and solved the problem without cleaning their docks? Think about that...

Now I know when Steve Jobs passed away people say "we will miss you" ...and this is the time I belive that...If he was alive I am sure things would have been handled a little diferrent..with just acknowlege. So many forums for people with this problem just after they updated to this 5.1.1 but still no apple statement yet and this was a quick update after the previous one to have another problem....

But they are loosing customers...Trust me I am looking for another phone this one pass down to my 3 yr old daughter to play with the apps...She can handle headphones all the times..

If you google this problem you will see it's been happening for years and not just with recent firmwares

I did all the stuff people have tried. When I got the problem I reinstalling the firmware, reset the phone.....all the normal stuff. The only way I got it back was the tooth brush trick and the problem has never come back (touching wood). Now I don't believe the toothbrush could have changed the firmware or software....It could still be just dust and causes the firmware / software to behave in this buggy manner.........thats just my findings

I just Upgraded both My ITouch and IPhone 4GS to OS 5.1.1 and now I play music in my car and sounds terrible. Now, I switch the SOUND CHECK button ON and OFF and everything works fine and music sounds great again but I hit NEXT song and its back to same problem.

Whats odd is that the SOUND CHECK switch stays ON the entire time but actually turns off. You have to re-cycle it to get it to work again. A very bad and troublesome bug because I use them to listen to my music, APPLE please FIX!!!!!

No Probelms until I loaded last OS update to 5.1.1!!
