iPhone 5 wifi issues
My iPhone 5 connects to wifi networks and remembers them, but receives absolutely zero data through the network. LTE and 3G no problem... Off to the repair shop (after 3 hours of ownership...) or any ideas??

Wow. Turning off LTE fixed this for my work network. I was at a 299ms ping/0.10 mbps upload/0.45 mbps download and 30 seconds later turned off LTE and I am at 64ms ping/5.79mbps upload/0.62 mbpsdownload. Very interesting. LTE isn't in use in my state (ATT) so I am fine with keeping that off.
Clarification edit: Turn off LTE and then renew the lease. Those two things worked for me. I tried the "turning HTTP proxy to auto," but that did not work for me. That gave slightly better speeds than with LTE on, but just barely. When I turn off LTE and renew the lease, I get the wifi speeds I am used to. Sounds like a software issue to me, because we don't have LTE here in Little Rock, AR. It might be trying to active the LTE network even though it should be using wifi. That's where my money is.
Thanks All!
Is anyone from Apple reading all this???
I have 2 iPhone5s (one black and the other black), the black one has the same WIFI dropping issue and the white unit works perfectly - called Apple (not a "known issue", they say!!!). Tried restoring the software - my local telco was helpful enough to carry out the test and it didn't help. This is not a software problem. My problem - no more phones to be exchanged and will have to wait for the next shipment. I live in Singapore.
I will never hear the last of this from my Android supporting friends if this doesn't get solved. Uncle SAM.... must be laughing their heads off!!!
If I don't get a new replacement phone soon - this will probably be the last of my iPhones.
These phones now have a good resale value in the market...........
My production is week 36 and factory is C3 - I think it doesn't matter which week or factory as this is not an isolated issue. On the bright side, at least one of my iPhone 5 works!
5 million may have been sold in the first week but I wonder how many are 'faulty'?
Is anyone from Apple reading all this??? I guess not......AAPL now USD 687.40.......
well as im sure most people in the same boat as myself will be eager for updates i've got off the phone to apple:
After explaining the problem i was told to perform the same previous steps that others have stated :
- restart phone, restore settings, restart router (the latter I kindly pointed out wouldnt be an option at work - where I needed it most)
this seemed to work for all of about 1minute before the connection started bouncing about, and dropping again.
After which I stated that my work colleague had an iphone 4s with ios6 and was experiencing no such problems
(always get feeling these people hate it when you may have covered the bases before them)
...Before adding a line that didnt seem to bode well with the mighty apple co. drones - "well my HTC is showing a strong signal" haha - I was quickly reminded that apples wern't htc's so a comparison would not be appropriate!
(.. I agreed to this point in my head, as it was rather insulting to compare my 2yr old htc, which was working perfectly well in the wifi department) to my expensive new iphone 5 - apologies htc !
Ultimately it seemed that despite being reasonably friendly, he wasn't to aware of the problem, and i've been booked in to my local apple store in manchester for ..... next sunday! :-/
here's hoping the long wait isnt a direct result of what seems to be a growing problem.
In the mean time i was told to look out for any updates that may arrise
Not really very useful now that i look back at the essay i've just wrote!
oh well, sorry people 🙂
I have two iphone5 64 GB, both week 37, Both factory C3, White one works perfect for O2, Vodafone. The black i5 wifi is useless ! I bought them from Brighton after queued for 5 hours Friday morning !
I'm having the same issue. 32GB black iPhone 5 = 37 week production. LTE is very fast, but no wi-fi at work or at home, whereas my old droid model worked fine at both locations. Especially a bummer considering Verizon discontinued unlimited data plan.
I talked to a rep and opened a ticket, he said most of the issues people have been reporting have had to do with the wireless not working at all, he suggest I take it to the apple store and have them diagnose the issue on their wifi, reset the phone, etc.. Bringing it in today, will update you on status.
Wifi Droping
Fix: Set your wi-fi HTTP proxy setting to OFF
(Note: This fixes a host of networking issues.)
Do the following
1. Setting>Wi-Fi><Network Name>
2. Make sure that all the way at the bottom, HTTP Proxy is set to OFF.
3. While it should take affect imediately reboot your iPhone6 after exiting settting.
Have seen plenty of users who have their configuration set to use Auto proxy. Will not work with certain networks and some IPS.
If you are not connected to a proxy turn it off, this will solve the problem.
Thanks
@shapetables I called Verizon's support line and, although they were unaware of the issue, are shipping me a new phone. I wasn't happy with the $200 temporary charge until I return the original but I went for it. No way to know if the new phone will work.
In the mean time switching to WEP was a successful, temporary work-around for me.
Don't know about the overheating capacitor since I've had the problem manifest itself immediately sometimes and after a significant period of use other times. Also, cycling wifi on and off often temporarily solves the problem. But you're the engineer and it's the best explanation I've heard.
A lot of people are suggesting to change a bunch of settings on their router to try and fix the problems.
This shouldn't be. If my router works fine (no security) with every iOS device in my household, my iphone 5 should work just as well. I've done a side by side comparison video using my iphone 4, iPhone 5, and iPad 1. iPhone 5 fails while the others work flawlessly and see at least 11mbps. The iPhone 5 gets .6 to 2.8 when not behaving properly.
BUT, a few minutes later a separate test yields 14.3mbps with iPhone 5. So the problem is definitely there, just intermittent.
I called Apple UK support today concerning my iPhone 5 64GB, mine came directly from Apple store SIM free.
After waiting half an hour on hold they put me through to a senior advisor who asked me to try a few things first was to setup a new user profile on my Mac, then start iTunes and plug in the phone and hit restore so it would download the iOS6 again, they then asked me to activate the phone as a new phone which i went through the motions and problem still the same.
The advisor then said he would have to escalate the issue higher to an Apple Hardware technician but this would take anywhere between 2 - 3 days.
He said they may ask me to adjust my router at home but also asked if I had tried it on another WPA Wireless network of which I did at work today and still same problem.
I explained my iPhone 4S and iPad 3 both worked and they are iOS6 so clearly its a problem with iPhone 5 but he didnt seem to really listen to that and kept on about escalating it to Apple Hardware technician.
So essentially my phone is only working on unsecure wireless or WEP, and to be honest after spending 699 pounds I am pretty annoyed over the whole affair.
It just seems that Apple isnt willing to admit that there is something not right with these phones or at least a bad batch.
So I now wait for further news from Apple.
Keep in mind, Apple created slightly different builds of iOS for each device, so we can't completely rule out iOS 6. They may just be a code problem in the iPhone 5 build. Apple engineers are on it, so we'll just have to wait and see.
Well...
In the spirit of trying to report the (my) problem completely in hopes to add to a solution by Apple, I called tech support.
First, the rep I spoke with had no idea of this issue. She said she'd never heard of it. Second she walked me through a bunch of things that I'd already done, of course I had no success with the things she suggested.
She's escalated the issue to tier 2 support, I'm supposed to hear back from them later.
We'll see what happens.
Confirmed workaround with additional ODD results. Shutting off LTE definitely speeds the connection as per a post from jjBurford. However I noticed something further. The speed depends heavily upon the position of the phone in relation to the wifi router. I had my phone flat on my desk and the speed was terrible, less than .1mb per min. When I raised the phone vertically in any axis, the speed increased to equal the download speeds of my iPhone 4 and iPad 3 on iOS6. When laid back flat on the desk, the speeds dropped back to sub 1mbps. Can anyone else confirm?
Turning off LTE seems to have helped a great deal. This kind of ***** though as I want to have LTE and don't want to have to switch it on and off all the time. Apple better be fixing this problem stat or I'm returning my phone. They are certainly starting to get sloppy. This is not some obscure feature that maybe they didn't test enough. It's kind of critical to test the WiFi connectivity on phones before shipping them. I'm so annoyed right now.
I definitely feel your pain. But really I think it's just unfortunate for those of us experiencing the issues, more then it is apple to blame entirely. It seems to be a very small percentage of the phones sold already that are having this problem. So that means that Apple could have done plenty of proper testing and these issues didn't come up because there isn't that many of them. 30,000 of 3,000,000 is only 1%, could have easily slipped by. It's annoying. But I'm more annoyed with apple for not saying a single word yet. A simple "we're aware and working on it" would be 10x better then, let's just ignore it until we have a fix.
