iPhone 5 wifi issues

My iPhone 5 connects to wifi networks and remembers them, but receives absolutely zero data through the network. LTE and 3G no problem... Off to the repair shop (after 3 hours of ownership...) or any ideas??

I wanted to update everybody. I've had my replaced iPhone 5 since Saturday and it's working fine. I haven't changed any settings on my router which is running at WPA 2 AES. My wife's white iPhone 5 has worked since day one (9/21) without any issues. On page 12 of this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4322714?start=165&tstart=0, I detailed my issues and how I presented it to the Apple Genius. I'm sorry that some people have gotten replacements and are still having issues.

Again, I suspect that there's a batch of phones that were shipped here that have faulty chips in them. It may also be possible that there's something in the iOS 6 software too, although if that were the case, why are older models and my replacement phone and wife's phone not having any problems.

Nevertheless, I do suggest for those that can, go to an Apple store and get it replaced anyway. I am glad that Apple recognizes the problem and are indeed researching it.

Here's too a speedy resolution.😉

Apple Acknowledges WiFi Problems on the iPhone 5

by Lon Seidman |

Apple’s support representatives today acknowledged difficulties some iPhone 5 early adopters are having connecting to WiFi access points.

The issues involve weak signal strength, no connections at all, as well as problems staying connected to access points that are secured by WPA or WPA2 encryption.

CTTechJunkie has confirmed the WPA/WPA2 issue with our iPhone 5. The phone will connect and operate for brief periods of time before the connection freezes up and becomes unusable. Connecting to an unencrypted access point or one protected with the less secure WEP standard does not result in the same issue.

Users on Apple’s support forums report that Apple stores were handing replacement phones to users impacted by the issue, but it now appears that Apple will be issuing a software fix according to a support representative we spoke with today. The representative said the problem is now a “known issue” and engineers are taking steps to address it.

No word was given on when an update will be available.

Sigh...now the waiting game...

This was normal for the first couple of days. Apparently, when your iPad/iPhone is connected to wifi, it references an Apple site to check your connection if it needed to login. If the connection requires a login, then in the settings the login settings appear after connecting to wifi(sound familiar? Hint: McDonald's wifi requiring wifi login to AT&T). The website was down for a couple days, so everyone's wifi got screwed up. But since then, Apple has fixed the site and everyone's wifi should be better. A simple fix, no update or jail breaking required. Though, I guess maybe you should restart your iPad/ iPhone, just to be safe.

Not too surprising one iPhone 5 will work great and another won't. Apple souces some components from several vendors. Put yourself in their shoes, knowing they needed to have, like a zillion of these things ready to go on Sept 21st. OMG I can't believe I'm saying this having been a Mac guy since the early 90's... demand for Apple products on release date is basically unprecedented in human history. You can only beat chinese slave labor so hard until the liberal media finds out and makes a huge deal out of it. (That's a joke BTW). There's probably one or two slight variations in components that were affected and need a firmware update. And Tim Cook neglected to beat the slaves in Cupertino hard enough to test each one thoroughly. (That's a joke too BTW, but not as much. Those guys make good money, I know, I work in Silicon Valley too).

We need to "bug" Apple to death. File a bug report here:

For what's it's worth, the chicken bones fix lasted the longest, I'm suprised it hasn't appeared on some 3rd rate site with the headline "iPhone 5 WiFi Problem SOLVED!" yet ;-)

Some of the folks on here with genius level sleuthing skills have found it's querying about encryption or authentication every minute instead of every hour or something like that. It's beyond my skills to understand the details but I think they are onto something.

Apple knows it only has "30 Calendar Days" to fix this or there will be lines around the block to return these things. Very bad publicity. I'm hopeful they'll fix it soon, but if not, I'll be in that line.

Hero worship is not the answer, Tim Cook is a fine CEO. Being in marketing, I think his handling of the Maps issue was masterful. Steve "You're holding it wrong." Jobs was insanely great, but FAR from perfect. He's not rolling anywhere, he's dead, and he was dead right in choosing Tim as his hand-picked successor. IMHO.

That highly subjective politcal bull aside, the answer is filing a bug report:

These go on record and people's compensation depends on their response. Discussion group posts don't factor.

And if they don't fix it, return the phone within the 30 day window.

I'm lucky to have a grandfathered unlimited ATT&T data plan, so I'll wait it out for awhile. If I weren't, I'd return it tomorrow and go back to my iPhone 4, still working perfectly with iOS and a classic for all time in beautiful industrial design.

Hey has anyone here on Verizon tried this new update? If it works maybe they'll be fixing it carrier by carrier...

http://www.runaroundtech.com/2012/09/30/apple-releases-update-for-verizon-iphone -5/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+runaroundtechcom+ %28runaroundtech.com%29

If you’ve been having WiFi issues with your Verizon iPhone 5 Apple has just released a software update just for you. The bug, which seems to only effect Verizon versions of the iPhone 5, prevented phones from using WiFi even when a valid connection was obtained. Instead the phone would use the 3G or LTE connection without the user even knowing. This could be especially troublesome for users with limited data plans.

To get yourself the update head to the Settings application on your phone, then General, then About.

You’ll see a prompt, like the one above with instructions on how to install the update.

Here is Verizon update info from Macrumor:

Apple has issued a Carrier Update for Verizon iPhone 5 devices this evening to eliminate an issue where Verizon Cellular Data would be used while the iPhone 5 is connected to a Wi-Fi network.

This carrier settings update resolves an issue in which, under certain circumstances, iPhone 5 may use Verizon cellular data while the phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network. Follow these instructions to install the update.

Don't take my word for it, go to their returns policy on Apple.com

For Macs, yes, been 14 days forever. But if I read it right, it's 30 for iPhone.

PLEASE folks, check this out and if I'm wrong, let me know. I'll update my iCal ....ahem, Calendar App immediately!

I'm not making fun, this is key. Really want to know the correct return window.
