iPhone 5 wifi issues

My iPhone 5 connects to wifi networks and remembers them, but receives absolutely zero data through the network. LTE and 3G no problem... Off to the repair shop (after 3 hours of ownership...) or any ideas??

"Verizon iPhone 5 updated to fix wifi bug"

"After being treated to unlocked iPhone 5s, Verizon customers got another surprise, albeit this time not a good one — a bug sometimes caused the iPhone 5 to slurp cellular data although it was connected to Wi-Fi.

"This was a particularly nasty bug, as it could theoretically rack up expenses on users’ data plans without them knowing. There’s no room for panic, though, as the issue has now been fixed.

"Users are advised to go to iPhone’s Settings – General menu, where they can update the device to the latest software version.

To see if everything went OK, check Settings – General – About after restart and scroll down to Carrier, where 'Verizon 13.1' should be displayed."

Did you guys try changing/downgrading/upgrading your router firmware ?

See my post.https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4381486?answerId=19846438022#19846438022

There is surely something different with WIFI connectivity on iphone 5. I had IOS 6 on my iphone 4, everything was working fine, on all wifi networks. But Iphone 5 Won't work on some of the routers/firmware.

Ofcourse if you are conecting to a public/Company WIFI (like most of us), we have no option but wait to get a fix for Iphone 5.

Ok Folks! UPS just dropped off my new replacement iPhone5 and I have an update for you: The new replacement works BEAUTIFUL with my WPA2 network and I did not change a thing. I got the new phone, restored my backup and I was able to connect and hold the Wifi connection.

The problem with the WPA2-AES connection issue IT IS HARDWARE RELATED! Here is my explanation given the fact that my new replacment works very well.

The iPhone5 with WPA2-AES issues has a MAC Address that starts with 98:B8 (Apple Manufactured)

The iPhone5 with NO WPA2-AES issues has a MAC Address that starts with 88:53 (Intel Manufactured)

You can check your WiFI chip manufacture company here: http://www.hwaddress.com/ (You only need the to enter the first four letters/numbers of your MAC Address. Where do you find your MAC Address? Go to Settings->General->About ->Wi-Fi Address

I'm glad that this nightmare is over for me. I strongly encorauge you replace your phones NOW!. Do not wait for an update since you more likely need a new WiFI Chip that has not be manufactured only by APPLE and ensure that INTEL is the one on your phone.

Next time, you go to the Genius bar, you can check this and get the proper replacement that you need. Just stay away from any Wi-Fi chip with a MAC address that starts with 98:B8

If you have any questions or would like to check settings against my phone configuration, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will be more than happy to help. As soon as I finish this post, I am calling Apple to let them know my finding and see if they finally can acknowledge the defective Wi-Fi chips on some iPhone5.

P.S: My only complaint now is that the new phone came with some scuffs 😟

I posted in the other thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4339516?start=105&tstart=0), but here it is again:

Just checked my phone - 20:c9 - Apple WiFi chip. Girlfriends I5 is a 98:FE - Apple chip also.

Both have spotty cellular coverage and more importantly wifi problems. I imagine this has something to do with the battery drains we have been seeing as well..

At home, we have to be physically in the room with the router to connect - WPA2 AP (don't recall, but I think it may be set to AUTO TKIP or AES).

At work, I sit next to the AP on our Barracuda NG FW using WPA2 with AES in counter mode with CBC-MAC CCMP and the phones will not connect at all.

They talk about potential MAC Addresses that are potentially not compatible "Hardware Issue"

My MAC Address : 44:D8:84:63:CA:17 , perhaps another combination.

This all ties in with how our devices communicate to our WAP's ?

I have an AT&T iPhone 5 - same issues here.

Almost all of the so-called "solutions" on here are not really solutions. Adjusting your router to be able to connect with the iPhone is bass ackwards and only helps those who connect exclusively via a home network. This is an iPhone 5 issue. It is NOT a router issue.

I agree! I've been on the phone trying to resolve my WiFi issue for 3 days. (One Apple rep asked if I had considered purchasing an Apple router. So I guess that means if everyone in the world would just get an Apple router, we wouldn't have any connection issues.)

Anyway, after resetting the network, resetting all, upgrading my router firmware, restoring through itunes (twice), renaming my router, hardwiring my router to my wireless desktop and reinstalling my router, my home network issue seems to be resolved. Now if all my friends, family, businesses, etc. would just jump through these hoops, I might be able to connect to their WiFi. Doesn't that sound reasonable?

This is a follow-up specific to the AES encryption issue. There is a separate discussion on this - if you are having this flavor of wifi issue check it out for more in depth exploration on this specific issue:

Apple Store Visit #3 - Replacement

Went in to pick up the replacement. The tech was quick, and after reading the notes on my problem, got the password and connected it to the (encrypted) Apple Breakroom WAP.

As we completed the paperwork I continued to click links. They were still loading well past the point my original phone would've lost internet connectivity so I left with it.

On my way home paired with car stereo bluetooth - check.

Signed onto my home encrypted network - working fine, fast.

Restored from backup from original phone - still working fine, fast.

Mac: 98:FE (Apple) Scanning back thru, I see a few people saying their 98:FE replacements are good. My original defective phone was a 68.

Bad batch of hardware out there, no question.

Big thanks to the discussion board community for all your help in getting resolution!

Hi Everyone,

Please refer to my post below of how i resolved my connectivity issue

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4317427?start=585&tstart=0

In short: Netgear Prosafe WAP Wg102 : I had to downgrade firmware V5.03 to V5.01 and everything back to normal.

Netgear is aware of the connectivity issue with IOS6 and are in the process of writing a firmware for the device.

As a poster commented after my solution, these issues may not entirely be an APPLE fault, it could be firmware frmo your WiFi vendor which they sent to APPLE before they rolled out IOS6 which was buggy, hence having to "roll back" firmware.

Good Luck everyone
