Macbook pro retina flicker

Dear Support,

I bought a Macbook pro retina recently, and now the screen keeps flickering, and is very annoying.

I am not sure how to reproduce it, when it happens, it will have horizontal lines cutting across the screen very quickly and disappear.

It happens randomly across all application.

It is the same as,

I have updated all patches, and still doesn't help.

Could you please advice how to fix it? Do i have to send it back?

Kind Regards

Hi All,

My Macbook Retina just came back yesterday, they took about four weeks to get this done.

They changed the screen from LG to Samsung, the screen is a little different compare to the original one, it has a layer of ruber between the glass and the metal. (Not sure if this applies to everybody, feedback anyone?)

You can see below, the outmost is the extra cover I bought to protect the notebook, second is aluminium, third is the extra ruber layer, then finally the glass.

So far so good, and no flickering and ghosting till now 🙂. Though I have to say that I am a bit disappointed with this problem, I can only hope that Apple will do better next time, because although I like Apple, but I don't think I could give them many more passes before I label it as an expensive but mediocre quality brand.

Good luck to you guys that have a same problem here, hope you can get the problem fixed soon.

Kind Regards

Andy

They tried to convince me that 2015 model is a reliable one and I am the only one having this problem. I am waiting now for the third one 😟 ..... Here it is a screen shot from the recording which I have. I will upload the recording on youtube so I can share it. MBP early 2015 - 16gb of RAM Intel Iris 6100

I assume it is a video card error or something wrong with the retina display. Or maybe something with customized ones??? Although I choose this model because of ports and price I might change my mind but I think I will go for Dell XPS if this continues to be an issue.

Resetting the PRAM fixed it for me

I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro Retina and a couple months ago I had the same screen flickering issue on my computer. It had never happened to me before, it starting happening in the middle of a game I was playing. The screen started to flickered in random ~15 sec intervals.

Somewhat similar to this.

After around 30mins it got worse... Instead of just flickering the screen would go almost completely dark in ~10 sec intervals.

At that point I had enough and the first thing I did was restart my computer. I tested if that fixed the problem, it did not. I then went on to reset the PRAM (CMD+OPT+P+R on restart) and that did the trick. A couple months have gone by and thankfully I have yet to see the issue pop up again. I'll keep you guys posted.

I also had the same issue. I searched high and low to find the sollution, and i thought maybe i could be a hardware problem.. but then i ran Color Sync with the tool "verify".. And it found 2 software problems..

/System/Library/CoreServices/Resources/Profiles/HD 709-A.icc

Header message digest (MD5) is missing.

The file is locked. Could not be fixed.

/System/Library/CoreServices/Resources/Profiles/SD 170M-A.icc

Header message digest (MD5) is missing.

The file is locked. Could not be fixed.

This problem cannot be fixed unless you change the files rights and sharing.

If you locate those icc-files, right click on them, and choose "show info" you can change the rights on the specified files. Change them all to "read and write". Do this on both files. Then run "Repair" in Color Sync.

This fixed the problem for me (no flickering for 30 minutes, before i did this the screen flickered every 2 minutes)..

Remember to change back to "read only" in both files..

Hope this will fix your issue!"

Thanks for sharing this. I repaired the files and the flickering on my 2012 Macbook Pro 13 Retina has disappeared.

Same problem with Mac Book Pro 13 Retina. Did occur initially after three months. Switched the computer off and it disappeard. Since then the flickering happens irregularly. I found a lot of posts or youtube films, with possible solutions.

What does help is turning the computer off for one hour. Have not yet tried to switch off WIFI.

Another solution was the reset of the System Management Controller (see one of the liks below) or resetting the PRAM.

If anyone has better solutions, please post it.

Apple should addres this topic and fix it

oh yay hello, joining the "screen flicker" club too here. I posted my problem just now MBP retina screen flicker black? because I have never found this topic. my MBP is really new and what I got is screen flicker everytime I'm working with photoshop. The same thing happened to my friend who has a new MBP 13" retina too, he bought it last Sunday. Is this because of the photoshop or..? But photoshop is our main program to work 😟 this is so frustrating.

Mine is doing the same thing, but only when I switch displays. I use my rMBP in clamshell mode on my desk a lot of the time. When I take it off the desk and go mobile then the built in display flickers/glitches until I reboot the machine (and then it's fine). Same in reverse. When I plug it back into my HDMI display I will get flickering/glitching until I reboot the machine and it goes away. I'm at a loss myself but it is very frustrating.

I had the flicker problem but it was most noticeable on the toobar at the bottom and in web pages. Your milage may vary but for me it involved a re-install and a restore from a cloned disk.

  1. Cloned my machine to an external HD using Carbon Copy Cloner.
  2. Reinstalled the latest OS
  3. when asked to migrate I did from my external HD BUT!!! what I did was specify what to clone over. I ended up cloning everything but the System Settings from my old machine. I had tried it with different settings and only when I copied over the System settings did the flicker return.

It seems there is some old setting in the previous OS that is not happy with the newest version (probably some graphics drive issues). Everything else cloned OK (accounts, apps, docs, etc).

I wanted to add this is since I did find a solution to my own flicker problem and it might help others.

Sure. I just tried again and i have no issues with righ clicking. Maybe your trackpad is not set for right clicking or secondary clicking. Look in system preferences/trackpad/secondary click and check what gesture you have selected. Also make sure you are logged as the admisntrator.

  1. Once you are able to right click the file, click on Get Info,
  2. go to the bottom of the pop up screen
  3. and in the area of sharing and permissions click on the padlock and then enter your admin password
  4. ensure the three types of permission are set to 'read and write'
  5. then run color utility and click on verify and then repair. then that should fix those files.
  6. Dont forget to go back and change the settings as you found them.

This is the 5th day and have tested the laptop through and through and no flickeing. I hope this solves the issue for you too.

Good luck.

Someone earlier in this thread mentons WiFi as the source of the problem. I finally read carefully - and then started experimenting. What I soon noticed was that:

  1. I only had flicker at home
  2. I only had flicker when an active download was going on

I switched by home WiFi channel around and after a few tries, picked channel 1.

Flicker gone!!!! OMG - !

I am running into the same issue but noticed it is happening on my 2nd monitor. I've noticed it on Lion and upgraded to Mountain Lion only to notice it got worse. It is most obvious with the dock bar and scrolling up and down a web page in Safari. Chrome is chunky but not flickering.

If I move the window over to the laptop's main screen the flicker goes away. My 2nd monitor is using DVI via a MDP adaptor. Hooked the monitor up via HDMI and it's still there so I know it's not the adapter. Hooked a Mac Mini up to the monitor and there is no flicker so it's not the monitor.

It seems to also move around like a bad cold. Before I started writing this message I noticed my menus flickering with other apps. Come back to it in 5 minutes and it's gone. Bad video RAM or graphics card switching is possible but it most likely seems like a software problem to me.

Has anyone else noticed it being an issue on a second screen? Argh! it's flickering now as I scroll to read the original comments...

I had this issue at the end of August after a month owning the rMBP. I took it to the Apple Store and even though I couldn't reproduce it, they took my word for it. They replaced the logic board on the device. Two weeks after I got it back it started happening again. It happens at least once a day, sometimes worse than other times, but under no definitive circumstances.

I've experienced it mostly while on Safari, but recently it's happened when I've moved the laptop. Since the logic board was replaced, the inside of the machine is not the same as it was when I bought it. I don't know what the issue is. I took it into the Apple Store again and there aren't many widespread problems apparently and they really haven't heard about it. I don't know what to do. This is really annoying.

Me too... guess I'll be taking mine in soon. Thankfully still under warranty, but not looking forward to being without my computer for any length of time. I wish I didn't like Apple products, because lately I seem to always get defective Apple products. I had to have my Thunderbolt display replaced last month... I had a defective iPod a few years ago... and a defective Mac Pro... Their quality assurance isn't so hot.
