The replacement will be just another iPhone 5 that has been refurbished. So it may break anytime after you get it. It really depends on the length of the time it was used before it was refurbished.

The production of iPhone 5 was stopped for a reason. Have you ever wondered why Apple introduced plastic cheap iPhone 5C instead?

Techincally iPhone 5C uses a modified flex cable for power button which may suggest a better design.

Apple is not accepting this issue on iPhone 5 as their design flaw and rathers lose customers than offering a repair option.

If you want to repair this yourself, the part is $24 and takes 45 minutes of your time. It's pathetic that Apple is not offering a recall or fix for this. The website www.iPhone5recall.com is growing every day and Apple is still trying to blame this on their customers. Gone those good old days of customer service.

Apple is no longer the respected company once it used to be.

For the most part, I personally avoid Apple products in future. There is no point to pay more for a product when it breaks just when you pass the warranty days and the company is not standing behind it.

I purchased/preordered my iPhone 5 in September 2012. Love the phone and had no problems with it the first year, but after the warranty expired I started having problems with the power button. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it took several tries to get it to work. I've had pretty much the same issues as everyone else and now the button doesn't work at all. I plan on taking the iPhone into a nearby Apple Store to see if it can be repaired.

they won't repair, the only option is replacement $269 plus taxes, and the replacement is not brand new, it will be a refurbished with 90 days warranty on it (hahaha what a joke Apple), and if you took it to the local repair center (and phone was opened)..now Apple won't even replace this (another big joke)....

you tell all, new old story..they won't buzzzz they will keep saying.....i understand but i am sorry the only option is $269 plus tax. i think apple has forgotten that if we can make apple so popular we also can make them bankrupt.

get your ph fixed at local repair (under $100 ymmv) sell it on Craigslist and buy Samsung Galaxy S5.

As I mentioned in a prior post, I had the same issue (power button not working and the phone's warranty period ended four months ago) but the GREAT news is that American Express paid for the replacement phone via their Extended Warranty program. The only option at the Apple Store, as mentioned above, is a replacement phone for a fixed fee of $269 plus taxes but AMEX paid it and I am very happy about that of course.

I recommend that everyone check to see if their credit card has this extended warranty coverage since it saved the day for me. The credit card will only pay up to the purchase price (I paid $299 for the 32GB version back in October of 2012). Good luck everyone!

Add me to the growing list of impacted customers with this defect. Barely over a year old iPhone 5 lock button no longer works. I took it to the Apple store only to hear, "Sorry sir, you're out of warranty so it will cost you $299 + tax for a refurbished replacement." Umm no thanks, I would pay that if I dropped or broke it myself but I will NOT pay for a defective product. If my phone was 2-3 years old I may have becuase things wear out but 1 year? Give me a break. I was planning on handing my phone down to my kid when I upgraded but thats no longer an option unless I fix it myself or pay Apple. Maybe its just me, but a phone that costs this much only lasting a year in a full body case and babied is ridiculous.

Well, finally, i took my Iphone 5 to a local apple service center in Braga, Portugal, and since the invoice was dated 5 Feb 2013, they sais they need to check the warranty status.

Then, they started saying the phone was sent out originally to the Luxembourg market in Oct 2012, and that this didn't match.

They said that apple might not give me the warranty because of that situation.

I then checked with the guy i bought the iphone from, and he told me that it came from a batch of phones he did buy in Luxembourg to re-sell in his shop. He told me not to worry.

Luckilly, after 5 working days, they called me saying " i don't know how this is, but apple sent a replacement phone for you. Giving the inittial situation, we really were not expecting this..."

Well, went to pick it up yesterday afternoon, and now i have a new (a.k.a. refurbished) Iphone 5.

Thankyou, E.E.C, for the 2 year warranty!!!

But still, 10 pages of post in this thread, and still Apple won't recognize the screwup they made with this small button. Maybe this will be the last iphone i'm gonna own...

Good luck to all of you guys!

I got tired of waiting for Apple to come through and admit they have a faulty product so I finally made the switch to a samsung. I'm sure many people will follow sooner then later. I still own an ipad but when it's time to upgrade it again, I'll reconsider if I should still get another ipad. Hopefully apple still comes through for everyone else. Good luck guys

I think I am just going to downgrade to the 4s and see what

Happens with the I-phone 6. The wireless radio is actually better in the 4s anyway, and I honestly don't care for the size of the samsung. It might as well be a tablet. I figured out the tidbit about the radio a week or so ago when my buddies I phone 4s had a wireless connection to my work router with 4 bars in a case and my 5 wouldn't even acknowledge the router existed with no case.

I also have the non-functional power button problem. It started about 4-5 months ago (just after the original Apple warranty expired, conveniently enough...), and it has gotten consistently worse over that time. It began as an infrequent occurrence, where I initially assumed the button was just a bit touchy and I was just not pressing it "correctly" sometimes. Over the course of the first month, it gradually got more frequent and noticeable to the point where it became obvious that it was a technical issue with the phone. However, I did notice (like some others in this thread have pointed out) that if I pressed on the button on a certain side vs. another or from a certain angle, the button would work much more consistently.

However, in the last couple of weeks, the button has stopped functioning almost entirely no matter where I press the button, how hard I press it, or how long I hold it down. The button will now only work maybe once in 50 button presses or more. I'm afraid of getting to the point where it *never* works, and if my phone battery dies at some point, I'll never be able to turn the phone back on again.

There is still hope to get a free replacement via warranty!

For those of you whose phones are now out of warranty (which should be the majority of people with iPhone 5s at this point), if you bought the phone with a credit card, then you should check your credit card's list of benefits, because most decent cards automatically extend warranties on anything you buy by another year, which means the phone is still covered through that program. I bought my phone the day it was released on Sept. 20, 2012, so if I'm still covered, then you are too. Just call the CC company for info on how to submit a claim. This saved me from having to buy a new iPhone as a result of the exact problem discussed in this thread.

Same issue. Apple store UK, Manchester Arndale say not a known issue. Say they don't sell the part to replace. Said that despite all the evidence I had there was no known fix. Fobbed off as out of warranty. Apple chat said there is the 2 years EU warranty but I need to claim from the point of sale. Carphone warehouse (Point of sale) say I need apple to confirm in writing it is an inherent issue. Apple now saying they have no case notes for my genius bar appointment saying that tehy need to verify it's a hardware problem. They cannot confirm in writing that it is an inherent issue (Even though the guy confirmed verbally on the phone it was) as they cannot email out anything that isn't a template. They have said the best they can do is to send me information about trading standards so I can make a claim against carphone warehouse. Feels like they don't really give a toss, I'm pretty sure this isn't the same apple it was 3-4 years ago.
