I have the same issue after warrantee . I purchased my phone from Singapore and unfortunately I lost original bill. I contacted apple service centre in India but they refused to repair it , and told me to give it in Singapore store. Power button failure is common problem occurs in thousands of phones. So Apple company has to replace this button free of cost without asking any bill and take the phone in any country for repair it.

142k+ posts regarding the same issue and Apple has NOT rectified the problem. I have had my iphone 5 (first iphone after BB and android) for 14 months and the lock button broke. I left android for Apple for customer care. Went into my local Genius bar and they told me since it is outside of the warranty (2 months) I need to pay $269 for a replacement. I didn't do this, Apple did. The phone is defective. This is what happens when 1 company controls the cell phone market. They treat their customers like crap becasue they can. Not only that, it took a fight for me to even speak to a rep bc I didn't have an appointment. This isn't a doctors office, it's an electronic retailer.

I have had issues with all phones I've ever owned. My issue is I have had my phone for 15 months and Apple doesn't seem to think that a defective unit is their concern anymore. I don't know about you, but if I implement a solution 15 months prior and there becomes an issue, I have to rectify the issue or we lose the customer. Basic business.

I have an iPhone 5, for more than 15 months and the button is still working on mine. Same thing for several others I know with an iPhone 5. It is a moving part, just like brakes on a car. Depending on how it is used it will fail at different rates. This does not mean the device is defective. My sister wears out brakes twice as fast as I do but there is no way the manufacturer is going to replace them for free outside of warranty. Basic business.

For your next phone look for one that does not use mechanical switches.

Likening a power button on a cell phone device to brakes on a car is an illogical analogy. One would have to assume I am either pressing the button incorrectly (impossible) or pressing it too often. The latter perhaps could be the case; however, I doubt it considering many others on this thread have complained about a similar issue. Unless we all are trying to turn our screens on too much, then this is not a usage or user error. This is a defective part. Much like in cars, to piggyback off your analogy, even though a recall is issued for a part, it doesn't mean 100% of the cars on the recall have the faulty part. Just means there were batches of the model that came out with the faulty part. Like the iphone 5.

Really? I'd consider this a faulty analogy. Brake pads are designed to be ablative, and replacement is considered normal and expected. There are things that the driver can do to mitigate brake wear. On the other hand, if the ignition switch on my car broke after 15 months, and it seemed to be an issue for many people, I'd expect the manufacturer to examine it as a design defect and take responsibility for it. Many companies own up to design defects; Microsoft did with the xbox 360 after many people came back with the red ring of death and doubled the warranty period. It does happen.

I've not worn out the lock button on any of the iPod Nanos I've had or on my iPhones. The analogy is valid for any moving part, read the Nano forum and you will see similar number of comments regarding the 6th Generation iPod Nano. I do see people who use the button much more than I do and much harder.

Send in feedback and if you wish call Apple Customer Service (call AppleCare and ask to be transferred) and lodge your complaint directly. Keep asking for a supervisor or manager if you do not think they are listening to you.

Any moving part will wear out at some point which is why I do hope they start getting rid of mechanical buttons.
