This is clearly a faulty button issue. I used my phone mostly for ph calls and not that often. May be on an average 5 or less calls per day. The power button went bad gradually. The worst part is when Apple tells you this is something not common and we have to pay $269 plus tax for this. I know the warranty is for 1 year but you don't buy things for one year specially a $649 plus phone. This iPhone 5 power button gonna cost Apple, I am sure about this. You can make 1 person fool, 2 persons fool, 5 persons fool, not everbody and forever.

Mines started failing a month ago. It *****, because most of the time I don't check to see if phone actually went to sleep after pressing the button. So I end up with a dead battery, because I have my phone set to never sleep. I guess I'm going to have set automatic sleep. I'm starting to see a trend thou, my iPhone 4 home button stop working 6 months after purchase and again 1 month after warranty and now my power 3 months after warranty.

Took my phone to the genus bar, so that they could check it out for me. After he told me that they can't fix it, he explain to me why it fails. He say that the reason it fails (especially the right side) is because most people are right handed and tend to press the right side of the button.

How is this a valid reason?

My Iphone 5 power button started acting up about 8 months since it was purchased. It got worse as time went on and will only work if I push real hard on the left side. Now past the one year warranty I went to the genius bar and got a very disingenuous run around to say the least. They tried to deny that it was a defect which direct eye contact rectified and then said basically there is nothing they could do but sell me another phone.

Now, I have been a loyal Apple customer for many years (love the products) and have spent well into the 5 digits on their towers, laptops and other devices. Furthermore, I made many Apple recommendations to other companies for their computers. I have also spent money on Apple products as gifts for family and friends........this I will no longer do.

I use Power macs for work and will most likely continue because that's what we use in my profession and the alternatives would be self defeating.

Finally, I'm an Apple shareholder and it pains me to post this but Steve's not here anymore and something has to be done.

After months of working around the problem by not turning the phone off unless flying (used the adaptive touch button/power cord when flying), the unthinkable happened. Dropped the phone and broke the glass. Ouch. Took the pricey "brick" to an ifixit shop and had the glass replaced and the power bottom repaired together for $115. Power button works great now but the screen now has a few "dead spots". Not horrible unless you are fighting hordes of giant aliens. Going to take it back to the repair shop to see if they can tweak it. Next time I buy the extended warranty/insurance. iphone is too expensive, too complex, and too fragile.

As I posted a couple months ago, here is the "workaround" for this problem that works fine for me. It enables me to at most use the power button only once per day (to avoid wearing it out further). I find this method is quite convenient....

1. On you iPhone, go to Settings->General->Accessibility->Assistive Touch. Turn on Assistive Touch.

2. When the power is turned off on your phone, and if you still have some function avaialble with your power switch, perhas only on the left side, use the switch to turn power on. If that doesn't work, then plug in your charger and that will definitely turn on power to your phone immediately. As soon as its on, if you don't yet need a charge, then unplug the charger. (In my case, I turn the phone's ower completely off every night and turn it back on in the morning. Only once in the past 2 months have I had to resort to using the charger to force a start-up.)

3. You will notice a "snowball" icon on your screen, which you can move anywhere that is convenient. When you want to put your iPhone to sleep, just tap the snowball. A menu will appear - tap n the "Device" option, and then tap on the "Lock Screen" option and the screen will go blank.

4. To wake up your sleeping iPhone, just press the Home button at the bottom center of the phone. This will wake up the phone just like the power button.

5. To turn off power to the phone, tap on the snowball icon, select "Device" and then HOLD DOWN the "Lock Screen" option icon until the sliding red button appears saying "slide to power off." Slide the red button to the right, and the phone will power off.

6. To power-up again, try the power button. It might work, if pressed a couple of times on the left end of it. If it doesn't work, then briefly plug into your charger, and the phone will start right up.

Though this method has been criticized here, it works fine for me, is convenient, and will keep me going until October when AT&T will let me upgrade to another phone, maybe an iPhone 6 - because in spite of this problem, I really like my iPhone.

Why don't the "geniuses" at the Apple Store know this work around and tell it to people to ease their frustration? Because 1) the "geniuses" foolishly don't read this blog, and 2) they're not geniuses.

What a bunch of CR@P!! I waited patiently for the 5, holding onto my 3gs forever... Get this new phone and first the Down volume button dies 1 year and 1 month into ownership..go figure.. , and now the power button is flaky at best. Its incredibly disappointing and frustrating to know that you've spent hundreds of dollars on these devices, cases to protect them when they are clearly designed to fail in less than 2 years. My phone has NEVER been dropped or mishandled and up until recently never came out of its case.

A huge fail on Apple's part and unfortunately for me and the rest of my Apple drones theres nothing i can do about it unless i want to retrain everyone i know on Android including my wife, my 8 year old, my In-laws, my mother and so on and so on...

So thank-you Apple, for reeling me in with an innovating and trendy product and then taking all my money for your product which has over time become less innovating and less reliable yet im still stuck here with no real out in sight..

UGH!

Today's the day I'm switching to the Samsung S5. AT&T has that new Next plan so I can upgrade early if I swap to a plan that ends up being cheaper than my current plan with more data. My power button 14 months after buying my iPhone. .I called Apple exactly 66 days out of warranty and of course like everyone else, they refused to admit their problem. I tried Assistive Touch for a few days but that was annoying as well. There would be this area on the screen that you couldn't use and it didn't help much that I could place that "snowball" anywhere on the screen I wanted.

So anyhow, today is the day I try an Android device for the first time. It's bittersweet because I've always loved my iPhones and had no reason to switch until this HW issue. My daughters still have an iPhone 5 and their warranty runs out in early July. We will make their power button fail before then and get a new phone. If I like the S5, they will be getting Android phones from now on as well.
