My stopped functioning too. I wouldn't say that they are good about faulty equipment. I made an appointment at the Apple store genius bar. Two people at my same table had the exact same issue with the iPhone 5 power button (Apple-- see a pattern yet?) The tech noticed a few dings on mine and wanted to see if it's the fault of the ding (no- not on the power button). Another tech was trying to deny that the guy next to me had a problem (his button worked 3 out of 10 times). And no one seems to be thinking- 3 random users, coming in at the same time with the same problem, may be systemic?

Recommend that anyone who's power button is starting to behave poorly start documenting the problem-- take video of the button not working, note the date the issue started happening, etc... it may be a fight to have it repaired under warranty.

I had the same problem and the rep at the Genius Bar gave me no hassle. Replaced the phone on the spot.

The problem came later, as the warranty replacements are refurbished phones. The first refurb had a poltergeist like software problem. Apps randomly opened and closed.

They replaced that although they couldn't duplicate the problem and almost had me come back on another day so that they could say they logged the problem and I claimed it didn't get better. Then they decided just to replace it.

The second refurbished phone I received, the home button failed on day one. I took that back and now they were pushing back in the number of replacements. They confirmed that the home button was defective and just replaced the home button.

everything worked fine after that

Yesterday I picked up the 5s and then Ebayed the 5 for $500. So that problem is gone.

They shouldn't force refurbished phones on you when you pay $100 for Applecare Plus.

My phone had the same problem. Brought to apple store in Hong Kong IFC (temporary job relocation to HK). I was told to pay over $2000 HKD to replace it since my phone was just 14 days over the 1 year warranty. Even worse, the store manage (Mr. Caleb?) was kind of condesending (instead of being sympathetic), saying something like "well, now you should buy extended warranty next time 😟". Would not have imaged this kind of "Apple service" back in the States.

anyway, do replace your iphone asap.

Well, I began experiencing the same issue with the power button two weeks ago. I took the phone to the nearest Apple store and the Genius guy said that he couldn't do anything for me since my warranty had been expired for 25 days. My fault for not purchasing an AppleCare package . . . I guess . . . or Apple's fault for making a product that does not last more than a year! I have been disappointed with the quality of some of the hardware Apple is beginning to put out. My iPhone 4 had an issue with the home button, now this. I purchased the iPhone 5 for its functinality and durability, but aparently I may just have to give Android phones a try.

I am having the same issue with my iPhone 5 and its a nuisance.

I swapped my HTC One for this iPhone so I am not the original owner (I tried Android, it didn't work out) I also checked online and the phone is out of warranty (I wonder if it would have covered me anyway, not being the original owner).

Has everyone experienced it getting worse?

Anyone who has gotten the button replaced on their own, has that fixed the problem completely for you?

Cheers

Now that the iPhone 5 is discountinued, what is Apple using for a replacement phone? Just a refurbished or the 5c? My problem started a week ago and I noticed everyday it's increasingly becoming more difficult to use. I had no intention of upgrading my phone anytime soon, and would eventually hand this down to my eldest.

I've got the same problem. Lock button stopped working just after 1 year. Brought it to the Apple Store and because I was out of warranty they said it would cost me $250 to replace it. There is no reason I should have to spend that for a phone just 13 months old. I guess I'm goin to try and just live with it until the next phone comes out. You would think that maybe Apple would warranty their phones for 2 years since that is the general contract term with carriers. This is just silly.

My phone is 40 days past warranty and my power button stopped working. Took it into Apple store and I was told it would cost me $280 to replace it. You would think an $800 device would last longer than a year, and based on the multiple forum posts and complaints online, this is a pretty common harware problem. Is there anything we can do?
