I have the same issue of the power button, it started that i wasn't able to press directly, had to try like 3 or 4 times to succeed, then I used to press on the very left side of it so that it presses, then it stopped totally from both sides to work. That happened before my warranty expires, but as there was no Apple store in my country I decided to go through a chat for service on Apple website in which the guy tried a couple of things and then asked me to go the store for replacement. Now, I'm in the UK and I have an apple store nearby but my warranty already expired, do you think I can use my chat case number as a proof that I reported the issue before my warranty expires?

I have booked an apointment next thursday with genius bar to see what they can do.

i'm glad you were able to get a free replacement despite being 2 months past warranty. I'm in the same boat, as a day-1 iPhone 5 purchaser. I am going to the Apple Store tomorrow to see if mine can get swapped as well because my Power button is completely dead.

IF I ONLY KNEW that this was such as widespread problem, I would have went in sooner!!! I did notice that it was getting harder and harder to push the button (i thought it was my case) for the past several months, but now the button is completely dead.

Did you have to hassle them to get the free replacement (because of your expired warranty) ? Thanks

you were lucky. I went to the Apple store today and they would not swap my iPhone for a new one despite this being a known issue. My 1 year contract ended less than 2 months ago. They wanted $260.

I declined, and was not happy. I would think that being a loyal Apple customer, at least they could be a LITTLE lenient... I have bought a total of at least 10 iPhones, 3 iPads including the latest rMini, iMac Pro, and they wouldn't budge.

Unfortunately, this tipped me over the edge enough to no longer support Apple, as this will be my last iPhone/APPLE device.

Same here. 1st iPhone 5 purchaser. Denied a new phone. Have to pay 260 for a new one. The rep told me that they replace the power button in these instances except there are no replacement power buttons available anywhere (live in Orange County, CA). He told to just keep checking back...what a pain the *** that is.

Good thing Amex warrantied the phone for me so looks like I'm taking my business elsewhere to Samsung.

I bought mine from Dubai and after they checked it out and told me they would replace it, they entered its number which told them it was from Dubai and they couldn't replace it here, they told me I had to go to original country of purchase!!

very inconvinent, they don't realize we are in 2013! The world is a small place 🙂

Hi, guys!

Thought i would chip in aswell!

The assistive touch can work also if you need to power down your phone.

After activating the feature in settings, tap the circle->device->press and hold lock screen, and the "slide to power of function will apear...

I did that, and then i wondered:"if the power button is dead, i won't be able to power on the phone! OMG, i killed my phone!!!", and then i pressed the power button and it powered on.

I guess that the problem must not always be hardware, but also something about the software.

Anyone else had the same experience?

Best regards,

My power button has been giving me issues too, on a 10 month old phone! I noticed that when I press the power button straight down it does not work 70% of the time. If I press the button on the left side it wakes up and sleeps normally, but not on the right side. This is definitely a hardware issue, AND APPLE SHOULD ADDRESS THIS! I am a loyal apple customer, and have been for years, but if Apple does not address this issue they will be losing me as a customer! I buy Apple products for the quality. This economy is still too bad for me to spend my hard earned cash on a poorly designed and defective product! C'mon Apple!!! GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!!!

Hi everyone,

I have done lots of research and a huge number of people are having this problem immediately after installing the latest upgrade. Me too, and the numbers are such that it would be an incredible coincidence that all these "hardware problems" occur just after upgrade. I don't know what to believe!

Ditto the other probem which I seem to have in common with many, many other customers in that the 'phone shuts down at as much as 28% battery and then can be restarted without charging. This also has occurred immediately post update!

I'm out of warranty and have come to the conclusion that the alternatives may be better.

Other "phones seem not to have so many problems, and so with some regret I'm ending my aquaintance with Apple and going Android which in any case seems to have caught up with OS in every way. 😟😠
