I bought Iphone 5 in last september and tried to go through their website to schedule genius several times as I have same power issue, but didnt go through several times. Finally got frustrated and was able to make get one. They are asking to pay ridiculous fees of $269 for replacement of iphone 5 and that to under contract. Your hardware warranty is out of service and you have to pay extra 269 to fix. Am I going crazy to pay this much, I can get early upgrade for 400. This kind of service is not acceptable when apple can see its not 1% its lot of people having hardware issue.

i have the same problem with my iphone 5.

when i press from the right side it doesn't work.

when i do the same thing from the left it works.

i'm very dissapointed how many people have this problem and Apple refuses to replace phones for those who are out of warranty!

i still have warranty(applecare) but i'm not looking forward to get a refursbished phone!

it's funny...u pay $100 for extra warranty but they give u a refurbished! meanwhile it's their problem!

i'm thinking about switching to android but the apps aren't the same quaility..😕(and android memory management ***** balls!)

I had the issue on my iPhone 5, sleep/wake stopped working from one side then practically stoppped altogether. It degraded over a couple of months. It was nearly 3 months out of warranty when I took it to Apple. They wanted £209 for a replacement. I declined and took it to a local mobile phone shop. They repaired the phone for £25 and showed me what was wrong with it. There is a cable inside the phone which goes faulty. Here is the fix http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+5+Audio+Control+and+Power+Button+Cable+Replac ement/10792 for anyone brave enough to try it themselves. Also ifixit shows the cable for $25 but you can get it from dealextreme for $4. I suggest anyone with this problem who Apple have turned their back on to try local repair shops who have experience with this issue. The phone was fixed on the same day because they carried the part in stock.

Mine is having the exact same problems since a week. 1 year warranty expired about 2 months ago...

Of course I'm nervous, and disappointed, because my iPhone 4 never had any faults and it's surprising that a more expensive and newer product turns out to be inferior in terms of build quality ("scuffgate", clicking display /both occured for me, but got used to them/, and now this, which in fact is a very SERIOUS problem).

Only the left side of the power button works, but if other people's experiences are right, it will become completely unusable in a few weeks. My friend is having the same problem, his iPhone 5's button broke about 3 weeks ago.

Obviously the phenomenon has nothing to do with iOS 7, it's clearly a hardware related problem. The reason why a lot of people are experiencing this after the iOS 7 upgrade is because it seems that the power button of the iPhone 5 (or the cable underneath) wears out in just about 12-13-14 months. Now I can still use mine if I'm paying attention to only push the left side of the button, but it's surely disappointing considering that I always took good care of my iPhone (never dropped it, etc).

Same problem here. Mine started to get harder (power button that is) to use, then became nearly impossible. Now, when I'm in the middle of doing something or using an app, the off screen randomly appears as if someone was holding the lock button down to activate the "turn off" feature.

I of course like most depended on my I-phone 5 to make it the 2 years if not longer, so I chose not to buy the 99.00 extended plan.

I love my I-phone, but I have found that like many companies, Apple just nickles and dimes everyone for every little thing. Like a 19.00 dollar support call.

Call me stupid, but doing something about issues like this with a company as large as Apple should just be 2nd nature. Offering support thats precise and on time for hardware related issues should just happen without question. It helps the entire culture of a company, and puts questionable consumers concerns to rest.

I really can't afford to have my phone fixed, so i suppose I will have to abandon the 5 until I'm able to upgrade, and go back to my old android phone :-( I barely got a year of use. This is so depressing.

I don't even have an apple store within 200 miles just small retailers.

I too had this problem with my iPhone 5 that couldn't get swapped at Apple store because my 1 year warranty just expired.

Out of All the Apple iPhones that have been released (I have had every one of them), this is the only hardware issue that has affected me.

I am also suprised how many others have this issue.

Back in the "Steve Job Days", if enough people complained and raised their voices on something (eg. antenna issue, and others), Apple would respond and aim for complete customer satisfaction.

Things have definitely changed now....

I've contacted a repair service and they said that based on their experiences the reason of the problem (as someone already pointed out here) is the failure of the Audio Control and Power Button Cable flex cable. See it here. The price of the replacement part and the repair here in Hungary equals about 45 USD, but if you have the appropriate tools you might be able to swap it on your own. I for one will let the repair service handle it. Am I still disappointed? Of course I am... but what else could I do... 😟 At least that would be a good reason to always buy the "not as interesting" "S" model... these kind of hidden flaws usually get corrected in the second generation... sad but true.

I too have had this with my iPhone 5. Its been getting progressively worse and has reached the point where the phone is now unusable.

There is an assesibility setting which can be activated which puts a floating 'dot' on the screen wich can be used to sleep the device, but it wasn't a solution I could get comfortable with.

Can anyone recomend a London, UK based iPhone repair shop who can fix the fautly power button for a reasonable fee?

It is only true in the European Union, not in whole Europe, but you are right with that. Though it's more complicated to utilize than it sounds. The main difference between the usual 1 year warranty given by Apple and the guarantee (2 years long based on the european law which bounds Apple as well) is, that under warranty you don't have to prove anything – if the device fails (for any reason), the manufacturer (Apple) has to replace/repair your product unless HE can prove that the failure was caused by a misuse by the consumer.

On the other hand, after the 1 year warranty period, Apple is still bound (at least in the EU) to replace/repair your product in the 2 years guarantee–timespan, if the error was already present at the time of the manufactere. That is, the defective quality of the flex cable which causes this problem for everybody, so so far we are good... but here comes the tricky part... the consumer has to prove that the failure was due to an error that was already present at the time of manufacture... 😟 That is something which is quite impossible to do for us right now, a legal action against Apple (or the distributor) would be needed, and the outcome is doubtful at least. Unfortunately it's not that easy that I walk into an Apple Store (or into a T-Mobile store, because we don't even have Apple Stores here in Hungary, we can only validate our warranty through the mobile network operator where we bought our iPhone) and I say: hey, based on the european law I still have 1 year of guarantee left, replace my phone right now.

So unless Apple admits the macufacturing defect and calls a world-wide replace program (which I highl doubt at this point where they don't even sell the iPhone 5 anymore – suprise, surprise, they turned their back to their faulty product instead of fixing its problems), that's all folks...

By the way right now my power button hardly operates anymore. Two weeks ago when the symptoms started it was at least usable if I pressed the left side of the button, right now it's almost completely unresponsive. I give it a week until I'll have to turn assistive touch on. Yeah, shame. Not to mention my other problem which I noticed a few days ago (rear camera having purple "dust" between the lens, which affects and ruins picture quality – also a glitch that a huge number of people are having with the iPhone 5; see it here) So, yeah... I'm starting to wish I had never replaced my good old iPhone 4 which was opreating flawlessly for a good 2 years. Good old times...
