Same experience. First power button only works on left side, gradually harder and harder. Now almost impossible. I've been buying, and convincing others to buy, Apple products for 28 years. Had iPhone 3GS for several years and never had any hardware issues. This is clearly a widespread design or manufacturing defect, and Apple should own up to it and stand behind their product. To loosely paraphrase a famous Steve Jobs analogy, we paid a premium price for the "BMW" of phones, and we're getting a response you'd expect from Yugo.

My power button stopped working about 60 days after my warranty expired. No help with Apple support and they want $269 to repair the phone. I think not! I a currently using Assistive Touch to work-around this problem. My twins got their iPhone 5 in July. I will make sure their power button breaks BEFORE their one year warranty expires next year. Shame on Apple for not taking care of this problem. We used to be very loyal Apple customers, but I am seriously looking at the Samsung Galaxy 5 which is coming out in March as my next phone. Ths S4 looks like a nice phone and rumor is that the S5 may have a metal shell. My brother has the S4 and loves it. He's always had an Android phone unlike me who has always had an iPhone. Unfortunately, my contract isn't over until mid-October.

The page iPhone Developers is writing about the issue as well, see it here.

It also includes an iFixit instruction video on how to repair the button yourself (if you have the replacement part – the audio control and power button flex cable and the appropriate tools). I might hold off for a little more, maybe a miracle happens and if a huge number of people are reporting the same malfunction Apple will be doing something. I'm not getting my hopes up, though.

I just got back from the apple store, following a call to the apple support. Bought two iphone 5's just after they came out. My kid tells me that his phone won't turning off . (Yes, he mentions now that it was buggy earlier but got progressively worse. ) The 1-year warranty has, of course, expired. The store manager pretends that he has never heard about this problem - despite all the buzz on the internet - and tells me it is $269 to repair. (The online support person quoted $199?). He will not budge on it. (A tech overhears and apologizes, saying he has a number of friends with the same problem....) AND, if you pay the $200-270 (add that to the cost of a one-year old $600 phone), you get a phone made from parts salvaged from phones that did not pass QC. And when THAT replacement has exactly the same problem six months later - highly likely - you will need to pony up another $200-270.

p.s. The phone is in pristine condition. It just won't turn off. This makes it completely useless as students MUST turn their phones completely off at school. That a power button on such an expensive piece of equipment gets buggy @ 12 months and stops working completely at 14 months is a manufacturing defect. That Apple is charging (formerly) loyal customers so much to fix what is NOT an uncommon problem, especially when it tends to happen within month sof the warranty expiring, is bad business.

Had power button replaced at "i fix your i" in Cambridge, MA. $70. Works fine now. This is an aggravating defect. However, I've paid to fix aggravating defects on other premium products out of warranty ... Maytag, Volvo, Infinity. Unless it's a safety defect, you won't get a recall from any manufacturer. Disappointing yes, but unusual, no.

However, Apple should be able to offer a repair for something under $100. Instead, they could sell you a refurb for $270, fix yours for $70, and make $200 on the deal! That's not right.

Nonetheless, I'll be gentle with the switch, and it should last until I can buy iPhone 6.

After all, I've owned many Apple products for nearly 30 years and this is the first time I've ever spent $ to fix one.

Just adding to the everyone else, same issue. Went to store told they could sell me a new 5 not 5S for $270. I didn't have time to wait for a tech so I'm going back later. It works sometimes maybe 20% of the time. I also have the battery issue since the last update others are reporting.

If anyone from apple reads these messages add me to the list of people going to a driod phone either back to Motorolla or Samsung if I have to pony up extra cash for a known problem.

Same issue with mine, same issue with my wife's one...

I am really frustrated... Frustrated to see so much people with the same problem and no reaction at all from Apple...

But what if Apple recognize this issue!? Seems like they're going to get thousands and thousands iPhones back for repair, and they probably just can't support that...

It's always coming back to Steve but frankly, now that he's no longer with us, it's getting worse and worse...

Two of my colleagues have the 5s and their rear camera just stopped to work almost at the same time...

Be ready to see Apple as just a simple Mobile device manufacturer, with different models to cover all different kinds of customers...

Come on Apple, we don't buy Apple because it's Apple, but because we are all used to a certain level of technology and quality (on the products, AND the service)...

After supporting Apple throughout the years, convincing friends to buy Apple, defending the quality and technology against "Andriod" Supporters, i can now say that i can no longer support this company. I bought the iPhone 5 when it was released only to have power button problems 8 months into my warranty. Not realizing that this was going to be a major problem for people in the near future. I thought it was 1 in a million. Sometime in December i started to get the same problem. Only the left side of my button was working so i decided I'd stick with it and just click on that side. 1st week of January, the entire power button stopped working. I took it into apple only to have them tell me that I would have to pay $269+TAX($304 is what the Apple rep. said) to replace the entire phone. Apple is asking me to give them that amount of money to have my power button issue disappear and possibly reappear again within a few months. Then they'll ask me for more money.

I'm going to wait and see if Apple recalls the iphone 5 (i doubt it) by April, otherwise, bye bye Apple, hello Andriod (S5)

My iPhone 5 sleep/wake button is also almost completely unresponsive. I can press it 20 times, and nothing. So frustrating! Even more frustrating? Going to the Apple store and being told I'll need to pay for a new phone because it is out of warranty, then call Apple Care to be told the same thing. Apple needs to take responsibility for this. Warranty or not, this is a KNOWN problem and has nothing to do with the lifespan of the phone. It is a defect.

I have been a loyal Apple customer for a long time and love their products, but this is really disappointing and a total turn-off. Dare I ponder Android?...
