My MacBook suddenly started running slow

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for since 2010 and it suddenly started running slow. This has been going on for a week already. I've restarted my MacBook many times and when I'm not using it I shut it down. I've tried many things to make it run faster and deleted 14k files that were mostly text documents, pictures, videos, etc. and deleted my whole iTunes library hoping it would work but nothing. I currently have 77.07 GB left but space has never been the problem since in the past I've had 10GB or to the point where I had no GB and it still ran perfectly. Two things I've noticed is that when it gets hot it starts running slow and also when I start watching videos on youtube or ones that are already in my MacBook. Last night I reset my SMC hoping it would work better and it only ran slow because of the heat but I see no change. I'm trying anything possible to fix this myself before taking it to the Apple Store and spending money on something I could've probably fixed myself.

Here's some information on my MacBook

MacBook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 220M 256 MB

Software: OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

Hi Lex --

MacBook Pro is running very slow; please help. Would appreciate any advise on how to speed it up saving me from having to watch the spinning ball all day long. Computer has been running notably slower for past 6 months or so; started about the time latest OSX came out. Many thanks!

Hi LexSchellings

My late 2011 13" MacBook Pro started running very slow a couple of weeks ago. I downloaded an app (Memory diag) from app store, that indicates that Safari is using "significant memory usage". After running EtreCheck, I posted my results on this thread:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6176083

I'd really appreaciate it, if you would help me! Thank you in advance.

Hey Lex (or anyone willing to help from a thread started like 9 months ago) -

I ran both the terminal command that Linc suggested on the first page and the EtreCheck in a new link as requested. Any help would be much appreciated because its like my MBP is perma-stoned and life is in slowmo, mehhhh

Here is the link to my thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6275406

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you my little internet heros.

Lex, I'm having similar issues as others are having here with my MacBook Pro. I've tried some of the things you've mentioned in this post and haven't noticed any improvements. I've created an EtreCheck report and started a new discussion here:

My MacBook Pro is running slow!

If you could look it over and let me know what I can do that might improve my computer's performance that would be great. Thanks so much!

I'm having some performance issues with my late 2011 MacBook Pro. Was hoping I could get a little assistance from those who have been kind enough to lend a hand to others already. I'm supposed to be the "computer guy" in my family, but I"m afraid they think too highly of my skills and this is over my head. Have already created a separate thread and ran EtreCheck based solely on the recommendations I've seen on here previously. I have no idea how to interpret so I'm asking for some advice....

Here is my original thread...
