iTunes 11.3 freezing when refreshing podcasts

I downloaded iTunes 11.3 yesterday and each time I have refreshed my podcast subscriptions since then I've had to 'Force Quit' due to the application freezing. When I try the second time it's better, though still slow. Anyone else have this problem? 11.2 was fine for me.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

I have the exact same problem. If this keeps up I am going to stop updating iTunes. (e.g. A couple of updates ago everything stopped working also. While it took about an hour to perform, fortunately someone posted a fix that worked. What has happened to Apple's legendary software quality control? 😟 Extremely frustrating.)

Indeed, I wonder if Apple used a different set of developers for iTunes v11 from the ones that worked on v10. Certainly not their A-team (or B-Y for that matter). I'm so not happy with iTunes v11 so far.

Hi Linc & All,

Linc, I followed the steps you suggested.

Unfortunately, the problem was not resolved.

This whole thing definitely started happening after the update to the recent iTunes 11.3 (54).

I am using 10.8.5 on an iMac 2012.

Will have to call Apple support here in Japan and make a report and hope it goes up the ladder so that the technicians come out with a fix.

I hope others post to this thread so I can have the Japan support refer to it when I call them.

SO, PLEASE WRITE ABOUT YOUR ISSUES IN THIS THREAD … PLEEEEEASE! 🙂

I only use iTunes now, don't even watch television anymore. I hope an official fix comes soon … real soon.

thanks!

I figured it out - excellent description, once I had figured out the German equivalents

it didn't change anything

iTunes opens on Music in the side-bar, beachballs quit some time before changing to Podcasts.

I tried to delete a file with the Cloud-Symbol on the right - beachball - wait wait wait - force quit.

I am getting surer by the minute that Apple wants to get rid of Podcast-listeners

Here's another observation. After I restored my library, I was updating my podcasts, and expecting it to take several hours. However, after I had selected podcasts and hit the refresh button, I changed focus to my ipod. Surprisingly, the podcasts downloaded very quickly!

In the middle, when I changed the focus back to the podcast tab, everything froze as before. Knowing this, I forced quit, and changed focus right after I refreshed. Then I was able to update my ipod very quickly.

So, it appears that the problem is when the podcast tab is viewed, not when it updates.

iTunes since the last update before 11.3 doesn't have an update button any longer - maybe the NSA demanded that? ;-)

instead it has a complicated menu, where I can chose automatic updates for all subscriptions once every hour, once every 6 hours and once a day and manual - but manual in this new brillant improvement by Apple means that I have to update each subscription one after the other - I have at least a 100 of them - right now I have access to the update choice menu only right after starting the program and having waited for podcasts to react.

When podcasts aren't chosen I have no possibility to update. And if I say every six hours then it will try to update all at once and freezes and freezes and the ventilator starts working like crazy which makes me force quit it because when it's in that mode I can't switch any longer to anything else.

Apple wants to get rid of podcast enthusiasts - we are bad cash cows - when companies want to get rid of an employee without compensation they treat him/her that way. Why not do it with unprofitable customers.

I have the same issue. It seems that not a lot of people are reporting this problem and I'm wondering if there is something we might have in common that is causing it. My podcasts comprise 880GB of a 1.5TB iTunes library. I have them on an external Thunderbolt drive (Seagate GoFlex 3TB drive). I'm running on a mid 2012 MBP 15 with 16GB RAM. Does my configuration have something in common with the other users reporting the same issue here?

Can't stress enough - this is something that the people who updated ITUNES to 11.3 and have problems with PODCASTS need to contact apple ITUNES support. I checked and support now has 2 options for scheduling a call - the second one allows you to give them the information on the problem you are having so they can review it before you schedule the actual call.

APPLE may not be aware that there are any problems with Podcasts because no one has told them.

It is something those with problems have in common and can include your setup and any plug ins you are running.

SO POST so apple can fix it.
