AApple just called me. UPDATE IO 8.2 is out and available for download. They believe this will fix issue. Downloading now.
I updated my iPad2 to 8.0.2 - it's still not working. I even re-did all the steps above. My issue issue is that it's stuck on "searching"
my my region is USA, my service provider is Verizon.
The 8.0.2 update seems to do the trick. I can't figure out why the original wasn't tested properly. My faith in Apple products is shaken.
According to Bloomberg, Josh Williams who was responsible for the 2012 maps issue was also responsible for the team that did the testing for 8.0 and 8.0.1. What's odd is that the rest of the maps team was fired back in 2012. I don't think this guy is employed by Apple tomorrow, lol.
SSo now I am on 8.0.2
carrier still set to manual
only updated because this morning after 36 hours i had no service again
all i I did was restart and ok but am trying update
ipad is slightly slower with update. Quite a few sleep wakes already and stil have service
maybe be next week I will risk going back to automatic carrier
maybe not

Following some advice (which I initially found here. No service on iPad 2 GSM after upgrade to iOS 8 ), I switched off Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> System Services -> Cell Network Search. (and then reboot).
After 10 hours I still have 3G available, and even switching airplane mode on and off again (such that a new 3G connection is required) does not prevent the ipad2 from loosing 3G. Let's see what happens after a couple more hours.

My 3G now switches itself off every day since I went to iOS8. But only once day, thankfully, so far.
Turning the iPad off entirely and then back on again seems to be a functioning workaround. It only takes a minute or two, but come on Apple - how hard did you test this "upgrade" for goodness' sake? And when is the fix coming?
8.0.2 seems to fix this problem. At least for me. Fingers crossed!
Thanks for the tip - I hadn't been advised this upgrade was available. It's installing now.
This particular bug is not mentioned in the list of fixes, but the list does say "including", so it's not a full list. Maybe we'll get lucky - I hope so. I won't know for a day or two if it's working for me, as the problem was so intermittent (once a day, tops). But thank you very much for posting.
Mine is off back to Apple today. I have no idea what they intend doing with it, given that this is an IOS8 bug, but that was their only solution. Perhaps, as a gesture of how rubbish they've been, they'll give me a 64 gig iPad Air!??? I'd settle for my old one back with IOS7 installed....
I'll watch the progress of 8.0.2....
INstalled iOS 8.0.2 and everything still remain the same.
also multitasking gestures are slower now, keyboard still *****, Safari keep on crashing trying to "reload the page" (why?)
ONce upon a time Windows' customers switched to Apple because "it just works"; now the levels are very similar, so what about something cheaper?
Hi all, try the following as it has helped me and a few others with this problem. Please make sure you have service before you begin
In settings select Carrier and toggle off Automatic. The iPad will then search for available carriers. Select your carrier manually and this should fix the problem. It's a relatively new work around so we aren't sure if it's a long term solution yet.
Same problem.. Plus other app non working correctly. WIFI quite slow. Apple has a big problem with IOS 8 - hope will be solved quickly
The ios 8.0.2 description does not say it addresses the 3G no service issue with the iPad 2. Whoever did the 8.0.2 update please keep us posted.
Lost my service again this. I had updated last night with 8.2. I just did the following as suggested in other posts: Switched off
Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> System Services -> Cell Network Search. (and then reboot). Except I did not reboot. As soon as I switched off CELL NETWORK SEARCH my 3G popped back on. We will see. I will monitor over next few days. Mine is the intermittent no service issue.
