I want to post a question and I keep receiving this error message- "You are not allowed to create or update this content". Can somebody tell me what the problem is?

OK. this MAY be easily solved when you understand the "structure" of these forums

You can only post in a "leaf" or "child" forum (depending your preferred metaphor)

this illustrates how "iPhone" is a "limb" or "parent" and you cannot post in it - but can in the "sub-forums" that appear as links

iPhone >

Using iPhone

iPhone Hardware

iPhone in Business and Education

iPhone Accessories

At the end of the New Discussion posting process, you need to make a choice of where to put it

Look what happens when I "Test"

THEN, look what happens when I type the word "iPhone" = ALL by ITSELF

SOME forums are BOTH parent AND child - like "Using Apple Support Communities" or "Apple ID"

With all due respect, no. That should not and cannot be the way it is meant to work. Zooming Safari to 150% on a large display should not hide information. And if the problem is that no selection has been done, the warning should be that and not the utterly frustrating and misleading "You are not allowed to create or update this content".

BTW, I have reported that to Apple many times to no avail. I wonder if they really read such feedback. Do not get me wrong. I love the Mac (albeit it could be significantly improved). All these are positive criticisms.

This is interesting, but I do not believe it's enough information.

Start with what link your are using. How do you get to this point. Might be best to begin with when you start safari.

How about some screen images.

------------------------------------------

ASC changed from a fixed window size to a Responsive design around Nov 1.

------------------------------------------

I don't use safari. Doesn't work well with ASC. Go figure. I use firefox with...

Thanks. I just login into Apple Communities here at discussions.apple.com. I create a new discussion and try to post. I get the "You are not allowed to create or update this content".

Please, find the requested screen capture (made with Snapz Pro X):

I get this:

Where do you go from here? I do not understand exactly what you did to get to the error message you got.

-------------------------------------

That's because create a post on the path I think you are taking is no understandable UX.

work-around: You need to create a post from the list web page of the forum/discussion you wish the ask the question. Get the list of forums from here:

Ok, it's a WAD -- working as designed. What you need to do is fill out your question, then below the question you need to select what discussion you wish to post your question. When you do not pick a discussion, you are posting to a non-existent discussion. Hence, you get an error message about not being allowed.

Anyway, only Apple thinks this path works. I have told the hosts that this path is badly designed. It's a UX bug, but Apple doesn't accept UX bugs with ASC.

PS. I'll let the hosts know, but the host moderate ASC, but do not control how ASC is designed.

With ASC you need to go with the flow. You need to find a path that works for you and ignore all the glitches.

The UX design seems be making an assumption about what one might enter in the BODY of the Original POST

Watch this:

starting at iPad PARENT forum - where NO post is ALLOWED

User uploaded file

User uploaded file

As you can see, #3 & 4 are clearly THERE - but should be marked clearly as REQUIRED FIELD or CHOICE - are NOT and result in the error message "Not allowed..." - which IS in fact accurate, just not fully explanatory.

IF you enter what Apple recommends that you give us - just the START of it - things change!

So after signing in and getting the welcome page, you click on:

User uploaded file

after clicking, you get:

Which leads you down the garden path, your seeking to ask a question. Now, you seize on "Start a discussion" to ask your question. ...

This scenario is a UX bug. It should not happen. The whole design needs be rethought.

As a patch, you should move Using iPad & iPad in Business and education above iPad Supporting Communities.

Perhaps iPad Supporting Communities should be eliminated. What can you do with this category?

Selection of community should be above question. Perhaps you should not be able to ask question before you select a community.

a patch: Better error message is needed. A specific check for this error should be done if not fixed via UX redesign.
