Double/Echo Email Notification Sound (iPhone 6 Plus and iOS 8)

I have iCloud push email on my iPhone 6 Plus. When I get an email notification the sound seems to 'echo'. Another way to explain how it sounds is it sounds just like when I get a notification and my iPad and iPhone are right next to each other and both notifications come in at once. It did not do it with any of my past iPhones.

Here are the steps I've taken to isolate the problem.

  1. Going into mail.app in Notifications and turning off "allow notifications" will turn off all visual notifications, but still allow audio notifications (no doubling of audio notifications)
  2. Turning off just "notification sound" by choosing "none" for each account will result in no audio notifications at all.
  3. Doing a "Reset All Settings" does not correct the problem.

All other notification sounds are fine, it's just when I get an email.

Does anyone have the same issue? Any solution?

I Am using a tone from iTunes for my email sound. Same tone for all accounts incl. VIP.

All accounts are set to badges, sounds, banner, show in Notification Center is on 5, notification is on.

I also tried this with a tone that was pre installed as part of iOS8 and it worked. I received 33 emails this morning and all came through normal!

thanks for the update! i am still getting the double "ding" when the phone is locked and then again when i unlock the phone. i have changed the settings in both the sounds and notifications areas but no luck. i tried turning sound off in the sounds email setting and keeping it on in the notifications are and then vice versa. i am hopeless..

I'm cautiously optimistic that it's working better for me now. The first thing that was wrong was that I had my "Sent" folder checked in the Exchange "Fetch messages" screen, so I would get two vibes when I sent a test message (one for the new message in the inbox, and one for the sent message). This was confusing my results last night and seems to be better now that I've unchecked "Sent". I don't recall checking it, so I wonder if it was a quirk of the iOS update.

The other thing that I did was to turn on an audible alert (just the classic "ding"), let a few messages come through (all with a single vibe + audible alert), and then switch the audible alert back to "none". I think I'm only getting a single vibe for each message now, but will continue to monitor.

EDIT: Ugh. Just got a double-vibe with the last message. Nevermind.

I'm using Push notification for my Exchange account and I'm seeing that the "Sent" folder is *always* checked and I can't uncheck it. This was causing the double-vibes when I was sending myself test messages earlier and I wonder if there's correlation with other messages, too.

The "Sent" folder issue is described midway down the page here: Exchange email not working with IOS 8.

I just got a tripple sound for a single email. So I guess it gets even more annoying!

At first I though the problem might be limited to my Gmail account, but it happens for my iCloud account as well. It also doesn't matter whether it's a single email or a couple of them arriving on my phone at the same time. If this goes on I might fully disable notifications for new email, this is just ridiculous!

The double email sound came back a few days after updating to 8.1.1. I even got double sounds when my phone was unlocked.

I spend a lot of time on the phone with Apple Care Plus. They had me restore the phone, reset all settings, reset network settings, but nothing helped. I received a replacement phone last week. Restored it and have the same issues as before. So I believe it has definitely something to do with software, not hardware.

I will call Apple care tomorrow to report and I already send another feedback message as well.

This really needs to be fixed!!!!

I finally got sick of the double and triple vibes and signed up for the dev program to get access to the 8.2 beta. It does appear to solve the multiple vibes (thanks for the heads up, joeuser54!), and it's made the stale read messages on the lock screen issue better. I still can't uncheck the "Sent" folder from the Push options for my Exchange account (it just re-enables as soon as I leave and re-enter the screen), but I haven't gotten a multi-vibe yet.

The lock screen issue is interesting in that the already-read messages stay in the list until I get another email pushed to the device. It doesn't seem like the "read" notifications are being pushed or acted on by themselves, but are triggered along with new message notifications. JoeUser54 mentions this behavior in the other thread, but I could swear that in iOS7 I could watch messages disappear from the lockscreen automatically soon after reading them on another device. In any case, it's better than it was in 8.1.1.
