iPhone 6 Plus Crashing (a lot)

Hi All,

I was hoping for some very detailed advice on getting my iPhone 6 Plus to stop crashing. It's happening many times per day and almost makes using the device futile.

When it arrived, I backed up my old iPhone 5S to iTunes (encrypted) and then restored that backup onto the iPhone 6 Plus. During the restoration everything went smooth, but after it rebooted and began syncing the apps back over, I would hear the phone ping (charge sound) and syncing would pause for a moment. Turns out it was having a mini crash and the Apple logo would appear for a few seconds, then it would start syncing again. No problems or errors were produced on the iPhone or iTunes.

Once restoration was complete (iOS 8.0.2), all of my stuff was there and iTunes still reported 0 errors. But as I used the phone, I would notice some weird stuff:

1) Swiping between app pages quickly would cause the same mini crash and the Apple logo would appear a few seconds before the phone came back up.

2) After launching an app a few times, the "preview" iOS shows when zooming into the app would become the app icon itself (rather than a preview of the app). This would happen for all apps when entering and exiting.

3) Some stock apps (like Calendar) would be missing their icon altogether.

4) The dark area representing a folder would disappear and the tiny icons just looked as if they were floating.

5) Lots more crashing (when using Siri, when just in my pocket, etc).

If you're still reading this, it's obvious I have a problem in my backup that is causing springboard issues (or something). The obvious solution is to restore the phone to factory settings and not reapply the backup, but I have valuable text messages dating back to 2007 that I'd really like to retain. Keeping that in mind, here's what I've tried:

- Restoring from the same iTunes backup again

- Turning off "Documents and Data" in iCloud

- Reset all Settings

- Reset Home Screen Layout

- Restore from slightly older iCloud backup

- Reduce the number of apps being synced over

When I setup as a new phone after restoration, the problem does appear to go away (in the brief amount of time I spent trying to crash it). I really just need some troubleshooting advice I haven't tried that would (at a minimum) allow me to retain the text message conversations and related media (picture and video messages).

Any thoughts that could accomplish this or information on what this problem actually is? I'm willing to supply logs, etc, if that would be useful.

Thanks very much!!

Payton

Hi there!

so far my facebook app is working fine. no white apple crashing of any sort. Have you updated to the latest version of Fb? And how didu update your App Store app? Is that even possible?

I really think there is something wrong when u restored from backup. I restored mine from an iphone 5s and i havent encountered any problems so far. did u restore using itunes backup?

I am having a lot of these problems too (iPhone 6 plus 128GB). I went to the Apple Store, and after some experiments discovered that it is a LOT more stable in zoomed mode. Go to Settings/Display&Brightness/View and select zoomed. After I did this the number of Springboard restarts went down to one every day or two. Sounds like an IOS 8 bug.

To select zoom seems to solve a lot of things. I tested that now for some hours.

And no crashes since then and the smileys are displayed right in the notification center and the banners. It´s not elegant but it helps provisionally.

So it seems to be that what i suspected. The problem is the iOS on the new size and resolution of the display in the 6 plus.

Hey there! Check out this thread:

iPhone 6 plus crashes when I download, update or delete any apps

Same problem as in this one... I have a big post there so I will save you and just give you the "Reader's digest" version:

Go to Settings and Display, change the display setting to "Zoomed" from Normal... You might get one more white apple crash but then it will work wonderfully!

I think there is a rendering bug in the Plus... My post there has more gorey details. 😀

What is DFU mode? My iPhone 6 continuously shuts down and reboots. I've updated all my apps per recommendation of Apple, but that didn't fix the problem. I am afraid to restore to factory settings and then restore from last backup because that may just return the problem. I've restarted the phone several times, but it doesn't appear to have done anything. Thoughts?

Interesting. The common theme seems to be iPhone 6 Plus with a large number of apps (993 for me).

If you want to try what I did to fix it, stop the restore after your initial data has been put on the phone (but before apps start to sync back over). Of course you must have an iTunes backup to try this. Then just redownload the apps from the App Store.

I actually found that many apps remembered all of their settings despite being redownloaded.

I did restore the apps via iTunes, had to cause it would take forever to do via wifi, but other posters said same thing happens if they start with new phone.

im thinking it is a memory leak issue that gets bad and eventualy crashes. Here are the common factors:

1) iphone 6 plus

2) ATT network

3) high use of apps (either of volume or frequency)

4) standard display mode

you think apple actually monitors these forums?!

The engineers of Apple,I bought the iPhone 6 plus, when you restore from a backup phone constantly restarts,i.e falls! After six days of constant torment,I found out that this happens just when I begin to return to their 1100 applications in the phone!Somewhere on 780 application, the phone starts to reboot!Fix this serious bug!I can't use the phone for a week!Make it possible to install in the phone a large number of applications more than 1200 pieces!I want to say that I waited a long time model to 128 GB,and why so much memory,if you can not put so many apps!I ask forgiveness for texta English,it is through the translator!

Andso, guys,Iwill tell youhow to achieve the stabilityof the systemwith1100+ apps!I reinstalledwindowstatesbackupiPhonetonewitunes, and restore, applicationputwithoutpapanosaving data!Andthe phonewill work without any crashesat all!BUT,you should stretchthe application againon the folder, andstartsfallingverycreepy!

It is not a memory leak - because it happens immediately sometimes, before any apps are run.

1) iphone 6 plus - yes, agreed. 128GB model seems most affected.

2) ATT network - no. Not just a USA issue. I have mine on O2 network in UK. Also crashes when in Airplane mode.

3) high use of apps (either of volume or frequency) - Yes, volume of installed apps is over 1,100 for me.

4) standard display mode - no, happens in both modes.
