phone call from Yosemite does not work

Calling from Yosemite does not work at all. It attempts a call using iPhone but then it say "Call failed" / "Try Again" Anyone has a cure?

EDIT: Yes I am on WiFi. Both the phone and the computer are on the same WiFi. iPhone is running iOS8...

OK.. here is the status and it is scattered all over the place.

  • I can receive calls from every device (MBA, Mac Mini, iPad, iphone).
  • I can make calls from iOS devices (my ipad actually works to make calls).
  • I can get handoff to work on my iPad (icon in the bottom left and app switcher).

  • I cant make calls on either OSX system.
  • I cant get handoff on my iphone
  • I cant get handoff on either OSX system (pick up work from other devices).

Sort of weird that some of the functions work and some dont... I've tried everything mentioned in this thread meticulously... I've even tried re-installing OSX and iOS on iPhone just to eliminate variables. I tried my iPhone as a "new" iphone.

So - I was in the apple store, they couldn't help. Then dialed in to apple care, 1st person couldn't figure out why calls were failing, elevated it to a senior technician who worked with me for over an hour. He couldn't figure it out either. It's now being elevated to the engineering people, i should hear something in a few days. We've tried EVERYTHING -- but calls still immediately fail.

TThat could work..: but that is a lot of work for a function in a product that is supposed to "just work"... I've met all apple support suggestions ti make it function and it doesn't work. i am unaware of a way to make one item work (receiving calls) but not another (making calls). This is a software issue undoubtedly. Perhaps Apple will release a fix to get my AirPort Extreme to proper correctly if that is indeed the issue.

User uploaded fileThere is obviously a problem with phone calls going through to Macs. I have a 2013 IMac and I have gone through step by step instructions with everything checking out including being on same Icloud account. I'm on same network and I am receiving calls from my Iphone 6+ to my Imac by notification upper right on Imac. However, everytime we answer call it says call failed. Another issue is no connectivity between Iphone and bluetooth using BT Pan. It will see Iphone but can not pair.

Pretty obvious there are bugs with Yosemite and Apple needs to address it ASAP

I had just written about the age of my IMac maybe being too old...

but something very interesting just happened.....I DID NOT change any settings

I have not been able to place any outgoing calls...all tried and failed...

up to now I have not tried receiving a call..... I just had someone call me on my Iphone 5S and I received

it perfectly through the Imac...

then I tried making numerous outgoing calls through the IMac and now every one worked fine....

not sure the reason

its almost like when I first received one of the original IPads years ago....could NOT get onto my Wifi network at home, spoke to

Apple and they told me to go over to McDonalds and try to get on their Network and if that worked come back home and retry and

everything has worked fine ever since that day

Hi Lanny wonder if you have any idea to this, I am totally flumaxed ...

I have gone through all the various settings suggested, rebooted, turned on/off both mac air and iPhone 5s, checked and checked again the wifi and subnets are the same on both devices, the apple IDs are the same but still I get the following error.

iPhone not available. Your iPhone and Mac must be on the same Wi-Fi network

Any ideas Lanny, anyone, please ?

I've read through the thread, but my problem doesn't appear to be addressed: When I go to my FaceTime preferences on my Mac and my iPhone there is no tick-box option to enable calls. The window I see isn't at all the one that's been posted. Both the phone and the Mac are running the latest software (Yosemite/iOS 8 8.0.2). Handoff is there and enabled (I know it has nothing to do with making calls -just pointing out that the feature is there as proof that I'm actually running 8.0.2). Software update has nothing for me to update, so what do I do to get the calling option to appear??

Hey, I think I was having the same problem as you and was able to fix it by editing the number so instead of:

(XXX) - XXX - XXXX

I changed it to:

+1 (XXX) - XXX - XXXX

For some reason it needed the country code for the numbers in order to dial out from mac to iPhone, otherwise i'd click the phone icon in the contacts app but nothing would happen at all, Hope that helps 🙂

What i did just now, and took me 1 day to check it. A part of all that was being adding to the post, I resolve the issue sign off of face time, restart the computer and then add the id for face time and with like magic start working again.

I am checking why that happened. since i do not know why stop working on the first place.

So log off from FaceTime and log in back again.
