Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

Yes, we noticed a couple of times earlier in this thread that it is mostly "pimped" Macs using exotic tools like LittleSnitch that are affected. There was even a questionnaire at some point... But there were also people with stock machines that were affected.

Actually I would prefer to have this fixed in Yosemite...

There is a new Little Snitch nightly, which is working fine so far on my 10.10.5 installation.

I still do not believe that it is a third party software issue.

I have the same problem. Now I run 10.10.5

I sent the MacBook to an authorized Apple service (using the original 4GB memory kit), they checked it but they were unable to reproduce the problem!!!!!

As they told me, my MacBook passed all the hardware tests. So I took it back with the unsolved problem.

Equipment: MacBook Pro Mid 2012

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB

Retina: No

With 10.10.2 everything works fine

for the first time in 10.10.3 when I verify permissions after a restart I always see the following lines:

and in Console the displaypolicyd.log gives everyday:

Most of us upgrade our memory to 16GB. (I tested my memory with MacBook's hardware test and works fine).

Does anybody experience the same problem with the original hardware?

Does anybody know any memory kit that works perfect with Yosemite 10.10.3-4-5?

I'm thinking to downgrade to 10.10.2 again, do you think that our issue is a hardware or a software malfunction?

You can ignore this particular permission problem. There is an apple info page somewhere on permissions.

Working without transparency and smoothing does help a little regarding to system response time.

Do those crashes happen more often on warmer days (summer)? My MBA definitely did not like heat.

Actually I had a similar problem before on 10.10.2, but there the screen would only freeze.

Well I think also that this is an os problem and it came after the 10.10.3 update,

I noticed also that all who had this problem did upgrade their computer with 16GB of memory and have the HD4000 video card!

Dos anyone here have this issue with the original ram (4GB or so) and HD4000?

I am sure that all of us had tested their memory and sure it's fine! I my self tested mine with memtest for 12 hours and with apple diagnostic several times and everything is fine, I start believe that might be to the amount of the memory 16GB! and not the quality!.

Well, I don't want to rant or anything, but please take some time to read through this thread. There are many people that also have other RAM configurations and use Apple stock RAM.

If you fill out this wonderful formdone by MrCamaleo you will see some of the configurations of people having the issue.

Haven't read all your replies.

But had similar issue found bad memory mod when running the AHT (key D at power on) make sure extended is run.

I am testing now, use one old 2G with other 8GB so down to 10GB from 16GB.

Yes, I also found that one of my RAM modules was bad with AHT. But the problem persists after replacing it.

To shed some more light on the bad hardware hypothesis:

Last week I took my MacBook Pro 15" (mid-2012, non-retina) to the local Apple store to see if they'd heard about this issue. The tech rattled off a list of machines that he's seen faulty graphics cards on, but it didn't include my model. All the same, and even though my AppleCare plan ended last month, the store agreed to send it out as a warranty repair (thank you, Apple!). When it came back, Apple had replaced the motherboard, both RAM modules, the mag-safe board, the super drive, and the super drive cable. I did a fresh install of 10.10.5 onto the complete stock system (including 8 GB of Apple RAM), I left automatic graphics switching enabled, and within two days had another kernel panic. I turned off automatic graphics switching (and installed 16 GB of Crucial RAM) and haven't had a kernel panic since.

If this is a hardware problem, it still hasn't been fixed. As I've said before, I'm strongly biased toward this being a software problem introduced in 10.10.3.

I think now it's %100 clear that it's software bug and I suggesting that some of us should send a bug report to Apple to let them know and find out about this issue or I am afraid we will keep having this issue even in the new OS X!

I feel sorry to see such problem of restarting and flickering with our Lovely Apple computers! I switched to Apple 10 years ago and I was always happy and feel confidence to use their computer and recommend Apple to everybody and this is the first time in 10 years I felt confuse about my computer! 😟 as the problem now persist several months. 😢

I haven't had kernel panics or glitches for a week, but yesterday it happened and i was just scrolling on Chrome (every time I have a kernel, I am scrolling on Chrome, dunno if it's related but the scrolling freezes). I also noticed that the iStats menu got all messed up. The thing different i made: I just enabled "Network" widget on iStats... 5 minutes before......

I think everyone should post what programs are they using, so we can find a pattern.

I have a late 2012 Mac Mini i5 with 8 GB of RAM, and I am not having problems with this machine. For me, this is only happening with my late 2012 i7 machine with 16 GB of RAM.

Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.
