Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

Another update. Still no kernel panic since 10.10.5.

However, last night I had something weird as well. First the MBP froze and I thought it would panic. Then the graphic glitch, which most of you know and is usually flashing around the centre of the screen, appeared on top of the menu bar for 2-3 seconds. And then I got kicked out of my account and was greeted with the login screen... weeeird.

And there was my first kernel panic in 10.10.5 😢. If I saw it correctly it occurred only once though and not twice with a 10s delay as on previous OS X versions.

I am using a Mac Mini late 2012 with the Intel 4000 graphics and the original 4 GB of memory, recently updated to 10.10.5.

Yes, I've had both the graphics problem and the frequent Kernel Panics. In my case, it seems to have been helped by uninstalling Little Snitch. Not a great solution, as far as I'm concerned, but I can at least count on not seeing my Mac freeze or restart by itself.

So I still haven't gotten a panic or crash since removing Istats menu and anything else that was animating stuff in the menu bar.

I still use Chrome as my default browser but have disabled the Hardware Acceleration in chrome settings.

copying over my list of stuff I've done:

* I've turned off "User hardware acceleration when available" in Chrome (chromium).

* I've turned on "Reduce Transparency" in Accessibility settings.

* I've switched Dock settings to 'Minimize windows using:' "Scaling effect" instead of Genie.

* I've turned off "Automatically Adjust Brightness" in Display settings

* I've uninstalled Stats menu (as it was suggested the animations in menu bar may help cause these crashes/panics)

So in your case you are with totally stock mac mini late 2012 (no upgraded memory or no SSD installed) you had kernel panic restart and the blinking problem, Which model you have i7 or i5?

as far as I understand you start see the problem after 10.10.5 or you saw it before that update?

and yes stock lappy.
I think most of the problems started with 10.10.5 and not before... pretty sure about that.

I have an earlier post on page 22 i think that explains everything but yes... Kernel Panics... crashes... and the blinking problem on the laptop and sometimes on my 27" cinema display. Changing desktops would fix it for a while or I'd just reboot to put it off for a while.

I stil have the fan freak out anytime I turn on a Youtube video or any site w/ a video in it. All software and OS is up to date.

with most of us problems starts after the 10.10.3 as the thread title says 😢 but it's not that often happening which is makes you kind of can live with it, I am sure that Apple will fix that, they always do.

I returned to 10.10.2 and now everything works just fine (same hardware same applications). We should push them to fix these "new" graphics drivers before Apple release El Capitan with bugs.

It would be good idea if you mentioned that you go through all the thread and can give them some hints about the problem that's

- Mainly with the computers that's have the intel HD4000 video onboard.

- It cause restarts and sometimes flicking bars (you can attach link to the video that shows this bars)

- It's totally unpredictable.

- Appears after the 10.10.3 update.

- It dos appear also with totally stock computers with no upgrades at all.

- Many threads and users talking about it.

- It happened with big variety of apps installed (so it's not really related to any app me my self I have never had little snatch installed and I have it)

and so on...

I belive in Apple engineers and I am sure they will hunt that bug down. 🙂
