Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

I too had suffered multiple, seemingly random kernel panics after installing 10.10.3 on my Mac mini (Late 2012) until Apple formatted my drive with a clean install of Yosemite 10.10.3 in mid-May. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to restore my entire Home directory (and only my Home directory) from a clone of my HD to the new installation. I had zero kernel panics until yesterday (Sept. 1) while running 10.10.5 -- none while running 10.10.4.

I had a reply from Apple to my report saying that engineering has requested the following information in order to further investigate this issue:

Please provide sysdiagnose output from the affected system(s). Please collect this either while the issue is occurring, or as soon after as possible (for example, take it after a reboot if necessary).

Please let us know what you were doing that caused the issue, so we can correlate your actions with the diagnostic output in sysdiagnose. Please try to focus on one or two actions that cause an issue. If you perform many different actions, it will be difficult for us to determine which action caused the sysdiagnose output.

More on running sysdiagnose:

1. Launch Terminal.app

2. Enter this command: sudo sysdiagnose

3. Enter your admin password

4. When sysdiagnose has completed (may take several minutes), locate the new sysdiagnose file in /var/tmp or /private/var/tmp. Upload that file.

An alternative approach uses a key command:

1. Press Shift-Control-Option-Command-Period when the issue reproduces

2. Wait for a few minutes (you can release the keys).

3. When sysdiagnose has completed (may take several minutes), locate the new sysdiagnose file in /var/tmp or /private/var/tmp. Upload that file.

I guess I should install the 10.10.5 update again in order to upload the sysdiagnose file.

Today I had several flickering problems working in MS Word 2016, and Mail.app and then I had a cold restart while I was working on MS Word 2016 and downloading a pdf in Chrome. It was something like a kernel panic but after restart, the system did not provide me any panic report.

I checked the system log and I found pleanty logs like this

I'm "happy" to tell you I had the same mixed problems of most here (graphics glitches and random restarts) and I nailed it all down to a defective Crucial 8GB RAM module I had installed in my Mac Mini. After performing AHT and "memtest 4.23" (google it) on it to be sure, and removing it, erasing disk and clean reinstalling I found out that Yosemite has been very stable since the last few days. No more graphical glitches or random restarts, at least in my case that seems to have been the reason. And I use a lots of apps, including but not limited to Little Snitch, Creative Cloud, Lightroom, Omnifocus/Omnishare, Logic X, etc.

I was going crazy since 10.10.3 but that was the reason. New RAM = new life.

Since it was the second Crucial RAM module that got burned in about one year of use, I can only wonder if the problem came out of the RAM factory, or it was just the intensive use (and maybe produced heat) and Mac Mini small footprint logic board layout that made it go bad.

I had the same. In this thread defective RAM was mentioned several times. It sure seems strange.

But my problems came back after replacing the RAM. Please report back in 1-2 months 😉

I have the same issues even if I reinsert the original RAM in my Mac Mini. If I go back to Yosemite 10.10.2, all is OK. If I go to Yosemite 10.10.3 (and so on), issues come back again!

I perform AHT and a 20hour test of Memtest86 V6.2.0, and my Crucial 16GB RAM is ok.

I uploaded several sysdiagnose files while the system is flickering and after cold restarts to apple engineers but I haven't got any feedback.

Apple should fix the drivers in El Capitan.

I assure you that I was in your same situation until a few days ago. Months of flickering and increasing random restarts. I sent some sys diagnose to Apple myself for some days too, as they asked for them, but I really didn't get any feedback too.

Out of desperation then I did a backup of my files and really started from scratch, zeroed my main disk, some times, Yosemite wouldn't even install. So I figured out there was something wrong in the hardware. Hoping for the best I tried replacing the Crucial 16GB with the original 4GB that came with the Mini then downloaded and launched the 10.10.5 COMBO installer. The machine is now working well and like new, even after restoring all the applications and data I was using before. So if it was the driver it seems to have been fixed by installing clean 10.10.5. In my case it was also the bad RAM the possible problem. However I used memtest 4.23, not memtest86 to test my RAM. It costed me the price of an espresso: http://www.memtestosx.org/download/index.html

Also check that your RAM modules are well pushed fit into the slots. Try even using one at a time, switch slot places, try other RAM (if you have a friend or relative that can borrow you some similar modules). See if a fan controller app can keep your Mac a little colder, it may also be suffering by excessive heat.

Last thing I did was blow some cleaner air inside the Mini, to remove internal dust. It is now running with the good 8GB Crucial module + one of the original Apple 2GB modules (tot 10GB). Could even be that Yosemite (or Mac Mini's hardware) doesn't like 16GB of Crucial RAM, and somewhat corrupts it in some way? Try my same configuration.

Other than the above suggestions I don't know what else you can try, maybe I'm being lucky to have everything back to normal for some days, then the problem will reappear. In that case I'll report here.

I was forgetting another step I took trying to solve the issue. My Mac Mini is connected to an external 30" monitor via the Minidisplay port - to - DVI Dual Apple adapter. This adapter has a USB port in it, where I used to plug in a powered USB hub. I noticed that lately it wasn't working well or at all, so I disconnected the hub from the adapter, leaving the USB port empty. Then I unplugged/replugged the USB/Minidisplay port, shutdown and restarted the Mini. Leaving the USB port on the adapter unused may have helped to stop the graphical glitches. What I am saying it may have been a hardware (or firmware) failure of the monitor adapter. That of course may be happening to those of you that use an external monitor with their own Macs and the Minidisplay port adapter.

I made the Memtest 4.23 test you suggested and it was succesful. I tried days before a clean install of 10.10.5 and the flickering problem was there. Only in 10.10.2 everything works perfect. The flickering problem appears in the second screen but also in the LCD panel of the MBPro, or in both.

Probably this 16GB Crucial RAM is not any more compatible with Apple.

I'm wondering if someone with OWC 16GB RAM faces the same problems

I put back my original (Apple) 4GB RAM just in case... but the flickering problem is here 😟. I don't think that this is a hardware problem. Apple ruined the drivers of intel HD4000.

This type of forum is frustrating. If you read some of the older threads, you will see that it is not the amount and brand of RAM that causes the error. as -ixen- says, the Intel HD 4000 drivers suck...

Ok, the flickering is back for me too today, while working in Lightroom (with GPU performance enhancement turned on).

No other known cause. At least Yosemite seems stable, and no random restarts anymore. Looks like those could be caused by the bad RAM, so possibly these are two distinct issues.

Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.
